The three-position-switch is for input sensitivity. The REW and FF keys adjust the level of the signal as recorded. I agree there is a difference. Jos. -- Ardis Park Music www.ardispark.nl |

I can't see a situation where I'd use it with external mics. [on the Zoom H2] If I'm going to that trouble I'll haul the MIO and feed it with the Schoeps. Neither can I, which is why I didn't say anything about the external mic input in my review other than that it was there. Then someone wrote into the magazine asking why neither reviewer (Bruce Bartlett did the primary review) mentioned the low gain and high noise level of the mic inputs - something he said "everybody knows." My response to him was that the power and value of the H2 is that it's self-contained and just so handy to use that I didn't see any reason to ever use external mics. In fact, I bought a Korg MR-1000 so I'd have a handy portable recorder with usable mic inputs for those applications where I wanted to use good mics but didn't want to carry an armload of equipment. However, I did take the guy's comment to heart, and did mention in a review of the TASCAM DR-1 that the external mic inputs were pretty much useless unless the source was loud or you have a high sensitivity mic. I'd like to get my hands on a Rode NT-4, which has the highest output level for a given SPL of any self-powered stereo mic I could find, at least according to the spec sheet. Maybe it would work out well as an external mic for these recorders, but somehow using a $500 mic (because it's the only one that will work effectively) on a $200 recorder doesn't make much sense to me. -- If you e-mail me and it bounces, use your secret decoder ring and reach me he double-m-eleven-double-zero at yahoo -- I'm really Mike Rivers ) |

But you never want to use that control to lower the level to bring it down below full scale if you have to lower the setting below 100 in order to do it. Otherwise, you 'll get a nice clean digital recording of a clipped analog signal. -- If you e-mail me and it bounces, use your secret decoder ring and reach me he double-m-eleven-double-zero at yahoo -- I'm really Mike Rivers ) |
