I have neither the budget nor the inclination to hang a hard-drive
from my belt. Besides, I was born inherently clumsy and tend to bump
into things and drop stuff a lot. An I-Pod would not last more than
1-2 weeks around me.

I've bumped and dropped plenty a flash/thumb-drive stick, and they've
never failed me.

That said, I'd appreciated your recommendations on MP3 players with as
few internal moving parts as possible. 8gB is the largest capacity
I'd need for my purposes.

Unfortunately, I can't offer any other solution. I tried several
non-Apple MP3 players and the longest-living was 14 days, the average
was two days (5 players, three brands). Only one of these
had a hard drive, the rest were flash. My last-generation Apple
Nano lasted a year, a month, and a day. That's abysmal, but
less abysmal than two days. I didn't want to buy Apple, and it cost too much,
but 2 days average life is a joke. Whatever you do, pay for the
extended warranty.

How about SanDisk's Sansa View, and SanDisk MP3s in general? They
seem to get mostly good reviews on Best Buy or CC.

Doug the reason I don't want an Apple product is that it can be used,
with I-tunes, ONLY on the computer it was installed on. I can't take
it to my cousin's in Maine, say, and download a song from his I-tunes,
simply because it's not the same install on the same machine.

I'd have to get a laptop w/wireless service in order to download songs
or manage I-tunes on the fly.

With the other brands, they're basically glorified flash/thumb drives
that will download anything/anywhere, on any machine. I need that
flexibility instead of being chained to one computer.

I've been very happy with my 8Mb Samsung T10. The screen is large and
clear, the controls are all touch sensitive(no moving parts) except for
the on/off/lock slider. It has a microphone to record, and a much better
FM radio than you might expect (which can be recorded too).
Oh, it also has bluetooth for downloads and wireless headphones and
plays some sort of video.

I've been studying SanDisk's Sansa View series for a while now, and
their 8GB player looks good to me right now.

I certainly don't know what is going on in u...atdomain.unkown 's
world, but in the reviews both at CircuitCity and BestBuy I read no
complaints of these or others kicking the bucket within 48 hours.
