IIRC, that was a Craig Anderton tome. All of my magazines are in Houston
(where I am not at the moment) and with my memory, I couldn't even guess
which magazine in which it appeared. Maybe that'll jog someone's memory to
help further.

No, this was deeper than Craig's articles typical go. Not that Craig
doesn't understand this stuff (he does), but he usually writes for
beginners. I'm thinking this was a review of a software product that
did data compression.
