I have been using roland 90a monitors in the studio.

Can anyone suggest a stduio monitor that i seasy on the ears?

well, usually it's more than one project, like if I have two mix
sessions (morning and night) i'll mix two bands' demos consisting of 3
or 4 tunes each.
after a day like this, i cannot listen to music for at least two days.

What are your SPLs like in the control room?

well my rig is mobile, so when i come home i sit in my mix position
with my radio shack SPL meter and play a 1khz tone through the
speakers, and adjust the trim controls so i read 80dbA SPL (about 4'
from each speaker). I never measured the spl while mixing, but i take
frequent 5 minute breaks (about every 1/2 hour) and i mix at a variety
of volumes.
i would say most of thetime it's at a "moderate" volume...I can mix
with someone next to me and have a comfortable conversation with them.

You really should do it with noise or music if you want to get a
consistent monitor volume. Or just set it so you like it, and mark the
position of the volume control.

When using a single frequency to measure SPL, you'll find that the
reading changes substantially with fairly small changes in position
due to room reflections. Noise or music will average out and you'll
get a valid reading even if you're off by a few inches.

yeah mike, i agree with you. the problem is that the ****ty radio
shack meter does much better with a tone than noise. what I usually
do is do the 1khz tone, then i just play 1 octave tones and make sure
they read about the same and i'm happy.
I do have the settings marked, but i always check it with the meter
because...well, it's the right thing to do. pots have been known to
turn in their housings, especially when driving 350 miles in the trunk
of a jeep.
