Default 5.1 amp kit?

Does anyone know of an inexpensive kit (or just a schematic/pcb) for a
6 channel amp with dolby digital input? The circuit would use
something like LM1875 chips for 5 channels and a larger chip (eg
LM3886) for the sub channel.

you wouldn't be able to get the Dolby Digital decoding chips as you have to
be a licensee to buy them/use the code. You're best bet would be to buy a
DVD player which has the decoders inside it (lots of them now have Dolby and
DTS decoders inside now) and build yourself a 5.1 volume controller.

If you really want to do this, downloading the Application Notes from
National Semi should give you all the information you need for the
amplifiers.

Having said that, why do you want to DIY? Doing it for the challenge
and fun of it is one thing. The hardest part of a homebrew electronic
project is making it look good.

I don't want to discourage you , but ...
After parts, PCB's, power supplies, and packaging (you have to put it
into something), you probably won't save much money, and you'll end up
with something with zero resale value.

I've been a hobbiest and tinker for almost 45 years and it still
annoys me to no end to realize that it almost always costs less to buy
than build.

The one area where it might be possible is speakers - if you have
access to woodworking tools. You can find some pretty good designs on
the 'net.

The digital circuitry is proprietary and not available for
use by anyone but large-scale manufacturers who pay
royalties to use Dolby technology.

channels and a larger chip (eg LM3886) for the sub channel.

There are many such circuits out on the internet. Of course
you should start at the IC manufacturers own website for
data sheets and application notes.
