I've got Eargle's Microphone Handbook, and while smaller and less
expensive, it still had quite a hefty retail price for a book of it's
size. John Eargle is a noted classical recordist and the mic book was a
great resource back in my days as a student, and still as an occasional
reference, but I've never checked out the larger work to which you refer.

It does present the basics in a clear and somewhat more scientific manner than
some of the others. If you want just one book, this might be a good one. But
you could probably get the same information from a couple of cheaper ones.
