Is ridiculously real sounding. Aea sent me a ku4, r88mk2 (phantom powered) and rpq preamp to use on my session this week in NY.

The ku4 is on my guitar. I'm playing Charlie burd's Ramirez 1a. It sounds just like a guitar. It's a wonderfully moody, deep sounding instrument, and this mic has captured it in exceptional clarity and realism. The ku4 is running through the rpq set flat.

I'm using an old RCA 44 on the bass. Through the rpq. Adding a little high end with the rpq. It is a beautiful, full, fat and real sound, just lovely.

And the r88mk2 is on the vibes. It's perfect is all I can say. I can't wait to go back tonorrow and finish this record. We cut 8 tunes today.

I have never used the original KU3... I don't think very many people have.
So I am really curious about this thing.

Got access to a BK-5? I would really be interested in seeing how this compares
with the BK-5.

I don't. I also have never used any other rca ribbon in this application. I have ALWAYS used my schoeps mk41 for this use. But I can tell you it was smooooooth and detailed and just gorgeous sounding. I used it with the aea rpq preamp too. I'll email you some files when I get to a computer next week......

was able to do it from my brother's laptop.

so this is solo guitar. this file is from the 2mix slate while we were tracking, but this of course is just a guitar piece. so it's mono guitar with lexicon reverb on it (from my headphone mix!). KU4 in front of charlie byrd's ramirez 1a, into rpq preamp and then radar.

Nate,

Is that Charlie Byrd's Ramirez you have clutched to your bosom?

Man I hate being that guy, but I rarely get a chance to play with good
tracks and I wanted to try something. I thought the noise floor was a little
high and tried some noise reduction and bringing up the overall volume a
bit.

The reason I'm putting it out there is to see if anyone thinks this took
anything away from the track. My high frequency hearing isn't very good so I
can't tell, but I use this degree of reduction on a lot of tracks on demos,
and I'd like to get a few opinions on the results.

So here it is, ever so humbly offered:

I think you may be unfair to Nates work - note the disclaimer he posted,
yes - the overall mixed level is low, but the s-n ratio problem may be
everywhere, including in your playback system and he probably didn't record
in a 16 bit format.

Digital post-facto noise reduction is very problematic with high quality
audio, albeit somewhat less problematic if applied on pr. track basis.

I don't have an opinion yet, and I don't have time for qualied listening
right now, I'll be back with a comment later.

Kind regards

No, the track is wonderful, and my reason for tweaking it is not a critique
of the track, it's an attempt to get some opinions on a post techinque to
reduce noise levels. Just that simple, and I apologize if it came across in
any other way.

And yes, a spectral view shows the noise really is in the track itself, and
isn't simply the 16 bit noise floor. I'm sure the track was just a quick
copy and doesn't really reflect on the the tracks that are actually being
used. Again, no critque of the original work is intended.

Nate, nice to hear this, especially in its rough form. Great that
you're not waiting until the tracks are polished to give us a chance
to hear this. Really nice.

I produced a record for a singer at that studio last summer and I used
that ampeg for the first time on 2 tracks on which i played electric
guitar. It's a super fat sounding amp.

of course since I was playing archtop electric, I also mic'd the guitar
(with an rca44) and ended up using more of the mic track... I guess I'm
really more keen on the acoustic sound of the guitar!
