Default Fisher 800C - Latest Find

A friend of mine who is a serious collector of vintage equipment going
back many years called me last week to gauge my interest in an intact,
fairly clean 800B, with the MPX board, but also the separate AM & FM
tuners *and* and AM/FM stereo setting.

Needless to say, it followed me home today. I will report later on what
transpires. The tubes are all Fisher-branded, a mix of Holland, England
& German-made, but with Fisher-branded GE 7591A output tubes. Tube
shields are intact, lots-O-dust. Even the knob-cap (in a separate
plastic bag).

More to follow.

That's an unusual piece. IIRC, this was manufactured when FM stereo was in
its infancy and the standards were being established. It had the capability
to receive one channel on AM and another on FM simultaneously.

I've got schematics, Fisher Doc literature, etc. on it that I bought when I
refurbished one. I prefer the 800C because of larger trannies, "standard"
AM & FM-MPX capabilities, and a nicer looking faceplate.

I'm sure you know what to do but if you need specifics, I'll be glad to
help.

For instance, all of the tubes are biased together and Fisher ran them HOT.
I'd at least change the bias set point and make it variable. Good 7591s are
too expensive now-a-days.

.... must be the 800B, not the 800C you have in the title line... the
800C is a 500C with the addition of the AM band .... the 800B
has the dual tuning, a very cool looking unit ....

.... congrats a good find!!

If I run across anything outside the ordinary, you will be the first to
know. Thank you in advance for your offer.

Peter,

I had one of these several years ago when they were cheap. I paid $50.00
and got an 800B a R101 and two other Fisher receivers. The 800B was by
far the best of the bunch. I am sorry I let it go. I was amazed at the
sound it produced. As has been said replace the bias selenium and any
capacitors that need attention. You will have a fine receiver. This
tuner has a really good FM and AM front end to boot.

Great find.

Regards,

Bill Cohn
