Default Recommendations for book or DVD on audio mastering?

What's a good resource even if one doesn't aspire to do mastering for
a living but wants to understand the process in depth, or wants to
elevate their skills from fumbling half-assed amateur guesswork to
having a clue as to what they're doing.

Thanks.

Find a mastering facility near where you live and book
time with them.
IOW look over their shoulder.

I highly recommend going to turnmeup.org and read the numerous
articles
there about mastering and the current trends. In particular Bob
Orban's
piece about why the popular tendency of abusive mastering is
absolutely
NOT needed is great information.

I knew he'd written a book, couldn't recall the title, but I
can second that one from what reading I've done of Bob's
writing.

IF
www.digido.com is still up with some of his writings on
it musician should take a look there as a preview for waht
he can expect from the book. Bob is a fount of information
about what one should expect from the mastering process.

Saw that and closed the page. Put up a new page and entered the URL, got
no warning, and Bob's site seems to be working fine.

Maybe Google has become its own virus. g

Interesting. Norton claims that the site is infected with bloodhound.pdf.23.
There is at least one PDF on the home page. Presumably, it gives the
indications of being infected.

The "loudness" issue seems to be a consistent lament I hear/read by
audio pros, yet it apparently continues. Do you have any reason to
think the industry will change?

The industry is always changing, but not always for the
best. Nor is there consistency as to what constitutes "best."

What about money-making artists themselves - I assume at least some
percentage of artists must be tech-savvy. Do they generally disagree,
or agree but don't have the clout to make it change?

All of the above. Some artists are aware of the movement to
not have all loudness all the time, but not many of them
have the ability to control this (the people providing the
money decide what will sell the most product), and some of
them want to do whatever sells the most. Independent artists
who make, master, and distribute their own recordings of
course have all the control they want. However, since much
of this music is distributed only via downloads and is heard
only on computer speakers or earphones by people who have
lost the ability to find the volume control, if they don't
want their music to be turned off or deleted, they need to
make it as loud as the last thing that the customer heard.

There are some audiophile recordings that have full dynamic
range, but they really can't be enjoyed to their full extent
the way most people listen. But they're available for those
who actually make listening to music an activity, not just
wallpaper.

Dave Moulton's _Golden Ears_ set. You need to sit down every day and go
through each section one at a time, but you will find it very much an eye
opener. You will have to put some work into it, but you will get it back
in spades.

Try F. Alton Everest's "Critical Listening Skills for Audio Professionals"
The book is more like lecture notes with demonstrations.
The lecture and demonstrations are on a CD. One note
of caution, the CD is in MP3 format so it won't play
on many CD players.

Eh? LEctures maybe, but examples in mp3 format? That
doesn't sound like a good way to convey the examples to me.

I don't have the credentials to question Mr. Everest's
media choice, and being as he's been dead for some time,
we can't goto the source for an explanation.

However, my guess is that the publisher wanted to get
the [estimated] 4+ hours of recorded material on one CD.
[YMMV]
May also be worth noting that the copyright is 2 years
after his death.

I've been coveting that set for years.

Hopefully I can afford it by the end of this year.

Glad to see someone I've come to respect thinks highly of it.

I"m sure it was pure economics. But again, considering the
subject matter of the lectures and the examples, I"d pay a
bit more to have them in at least 16 bit 44.1 for my
edification. I'd figure listening to samples of different
mastering techniques etc. in mp3 would be like looking at an exhibit of paintings through a smudged dirty glass
windowpane.

However, my guess is that the publisher wanted to get

OF course, and pure economic reasoning.

MR. Everest's books are quite well done, and I"m sure these
were too. Too bad the publishers made the choices they
made.

Richard
