94 Corolla ; stereo won't turn on?
I just recently bought a 94 Toyota Corolla. As it didn't come with rear
speakers I took it to best Buy and they wired them and installed those for me. Anyways, factory AM/FM radio wasn't groovy with me, so I took the JVC CD Player out of my nissan Stanza which broke down (it was after-market CD player just to make sure) Best Buy would charge $90 for some ridiculous reason (brackets, wiring harness, etc etc) so after some time online I went to Circuit City and bought the proper wiring and vehicle wiring harness for $25 total. Took out the stock radio and set about installing the JVC CD Player. Pluged the wires into the proper spots of the vehicle harness, plugged that into the radio harness, and that into the CD player. Everything fits, it IS the proper wires I'm absolutely sure of that and nothing appears to be loose. Plugged that in, plugged the antenna wire into the CD player, and turned the car on. Nothing. I thought maybe the fuse on the CD player itself went out, checked it, and even replaced it with a spare I have, and still nothing. Same with the fuse for the radio on the car itself which I know isn't the problem, as the radio and lighter are on the same fuse and the lighter works. What could POSSIBLY be wrong? I thought it MIGHT be the Ground, as I had that problem with the CD player in my last car. It has a black wire that runs through both harnesses for the ground-wire, but in my other car that was the culprit and I had no idea what to do so Best Buy split the black wire to another one and connected that to a metal spot of the frame, and it worked fine until the car broke down. If I can't figure anything else out I might try that..I'd hate to split the wire if it's not necessary but it's better than paying Best Buy lots of cash to fix it. I might take it to Best Buy tomorrow anyways to see if they can figure out what's wrong and what they'd charge to fix it (since it's not an installation, hopefully cheap or free, depends on what they say) |

Check and make sure your power lead is actually getting power, that
makes a huge difference. If it is, check the ground a be sure its sufficient. If that isnt the problem, check and make sure all your connections are good no loose wire or anything. also did you use butt-connectors or anything like that that can make a difference, because with out it your wire can come loose and not have a good connection. good luck! I said I'm absolutely sure it's the right wires, not that they're fine,
they appear to be fine though. It got too dark for me to look into it any further tonight without a decent worklight available, so tomorrow morning I'll look into everything, I do think the ground wire might be the problem. I checked the wires from when it was in my Nissan, the ground was split off from the black wire (labeled as ground on the CD player of course) to a different wire, and attached to a metal piece of the car of course. The other side the wire was simply cut, so nothing was going to wherever that signal would be going. Maybe with this particular CD player the actual ground-wire doesn't go where it's intended to. Captain Howdy wrote: Since you're "absolutely" sure that your wiring is fine, your cd player must be broken. Replace the cd player, if the replacement still does not work then replace the car. |

The only time real installers use butt-connectors is only when there
is no one around that is straight to hold the wires as they get soldered. The colored wiring diagram posted earlier is incorrect for the CD player I have BTW, I'll try these then I'll write down the wiring color-code and post that up too. |

The culprit was the "Dome Light" fuse under the hood. I had glanced at the box but didn't get around to checking fuses yesterday until it was darker. So the stereo is in fact working perfectly fine now, thanks a lot everybody! Hopefully when I get the rest of the stuff for my sub that'll go smoothly, I'll probably have my friend help me install it as I've never done one before and he has. Thanks everybody! |
