I am having trouble with the volume of my turntable. When hooked to a
receiver the volume on the receiver must be turned all the way to max
in order to get a nice listening levle, and it still isnt loud enough.
Does anyone know what this problem could be? Bad needle possible? I
have no idea what it could be or how to correct it, but it is defn.

I'd hazard a guess that you've perchance connected a turntable to the
line input of a modern receiver instead of an input labeled "phono."
Turntables output a lower voltage than most other gear, and they also
require a separate preamp to apply the RIAA equalization de-emphasis.

If your receiver lacks a phono input (and hence a proper phono
preamp), you will need to purchase and external phono preamp. I
understand Radio Shack offers one at nominal cost.

Oh yay. Someone who wants answers, but doesn't want to contribute to

My high output MC cartridge still lacks the oomph of a MM, and
my volume control must be way up also.

Every MC I've ever used required either a transformer or a pre-preamp
for adequate levels. Some amps had MC-compatible inputs (I think
my NAD 7400 receiver has them, but I'm using a transformer anyway).

My experience is with mid to high-end cartridges before 1980, when I
lost interest in what was going on in the high-end audio area.
