I am considering buying a thorens td150 mk1. The small arm-lifter
device does not lift the arm as it should. Is this easily fixable?

Also, which turntable is preferable from a durability and sound
perspective, the td 150 or td 160?

Probably. But why would you buy a TD150? There must lots of better
choices out there, at least if you would use the original Thorens arm.
The TD150 without arm, however, was a pretty standard and robust
rubber belt driven device, typically equipped wit a SME 3009 or
Ortofon 202 arm. I happen to own one with an SME pickup arm.

I would go for a more modern Dual or Rega if I were you.

Perhaps i should have mentioned that i live in south africa
and turntables, especially second hand ones, are few and far
between.

OK. Then by all means, get the Thorens TD150. Put in on your kitchen
table, and have a look at it. These things are not rocket science, you
will probably find out what the problem is.

If the lifter is badly broken, you could:
1. live without it.
2. Try http://www.thorens.com/default.htm for service parts, or
3. perhaps find a standalone unit, which used to be in the market when
vinyl players where in everybodies systems.
