Default Adobe Audition 2.0

I am considering buying Audition 2.0, but am intimidated by the price
and the bad reviews on amazon.com. Basically I just want to record
multiple voice tracks over wav files of music I've made in FL Studio,
edit and apply effects to them, and mix the vocals so that they sound
professional. Is 2.0 really as bad as I am being led to believe? Is
1.5 still available anywhere legit? (I understand 2.0 doesn't support
ReWire technology). Is it likely that I will have a problem doing
these simple things? Thank you in advance for your input.

There were three copies of Adobe Audition 1.5 still available at
www.amazon.com just a little while ago. I happen to like 1.5. The UI
has been significantly changed for 2.0 which could cause those with 1.5
keyboard short cut habits to curse significantly.

Don't they have a demo? I haven't read a lot but from what I have most seem
pleased with it.

I've not seen it get a bad review here, quite the contrary. Ditto
alt.music.home-studio and alt.music.home-recording.

I haven't pounded on it like I did previous versions but what I have done
shows no problems.

Were the bad reviews with respect to the latest version or to the product
in general?

Audition 1.5 and 2 are just fine - hough there may be something much more
economical that will do what you want, like N-Track Studio...

Huh?

I just looked at the Audition 2.0 reviews on Amazon and found nothing but
positive reviews.

Audition will definately do that very well.

As I look at it right now (on my 2nd screen) there are two

No question. Audition may even be overkill.

Arny, I was about to agree with you 100% until I went to
Amazon.com and read the (two) customer reviews for myself.
Granted, two sample points are not that overwhelming, but then
AA2 hasn't been out that long, and Amazon isn't a primary
source of user discussion about higher-end audio products.

However, I must say that I am concerned about what I read in
those reviews. I have been using CE2K and CEP since long
before they sold out to Adobe and CEP/AA is my primary
audio mixing/processing tool on several computers.

The kinds of things they are complaining about are the very
things that bug me significantly about other Adobe products
which I use regularly (Premiere, Encore and Photoshop).
There seems to be a continuing influence of a non-MSwin
UI scheme (Mac perhaps? :-) which makes Adobe products
more awkward, less intuitive to use compared to other more
conventional MSwin applications. Part of my day job is
designing User Interfaces, so I may be a bit more sensitive
to this than others?

I am particularly troubled by the reports about the shortcut
keys as I use a customized set quite extensively to do
repetitive tasks for both audio production (speech and music)
and for video "sweetening".

I believe I will download the trial version and try it before
committing to just another lock-step upgrade. Hope this is
not the end of the line of usable versions.

Hmmm? I knew there was a reason that I have my copy of 2.0 on the shelf. I
had put off installing it until business slows down a bit. Now, maybe it
will stay on the shelf. Has anyone installed 2.0 in its own directory,
while keeping 1.5? Does it mess with 1.5's functionality?

I have CE2K, AA1.0 and AA2.0 co-existing happily on one computer
without a problem.

In my opinion these negative reviews are pretty superficial. Especially
the first one.

There are a few things which I don't like in AA2.0 but my opinions are
in general positive and I'm happy with the new version. But keep in
mind that I use the program mostly for wave editing, and only rarely
for multitracking (and multi means 2-3 in my case). Also, I do not use
external plug-ins.

I don't have time right now to give a detailed opinion of 2.0's pros
and cons, my later - if anyone's interested.

I looked at using AA2.0 a couple of weeks ago... My needs were very basic
(more basic than the OP even) and I could tell just from the screenshots on
the Adobe website that it was going to be more of a headache than a help. I
decided to download the demo anyways to give it a fair shot and it wouldn't
even install on W2K. I'm really happy with CEP.

Adobe did some good things and some bad things. If you like tabbed
interfaces (Like Sonar for example) you will love 2.0 However if you
are a 1.5 power user, it's going to take some time to get used to the
interface.
I like it, my friend does not so go figure.

I think they've lost the simplicity and speed that was so nice about Cool
Edit. It used to be more of a multitrack wave editor, now it's just
another DAW.

Also, some of my plugins refused to run, preferring to make stuttering
noises and requiring restarting the program (even after removing them from
the effects rack) to fix the problem.

Audition got plugin latency compensation in 2.0 didn't it?
I'd imagine it's related as I've not known any DAW to move to it
without a few hiccups.

Mainly functionality. Several years ago I did a lot of recording on a
friend's computer using CoolEdit, and my experiences were very
positive, which is why I was sort of gravitating towards Audition. I
was very excited when I read that 1.5 supported ReWire technology and
could be used to mix FL Studio projects in the multichannel mode... but
then very disappointed to read that this feature has been dropped in
2.0. While this and reports of 2.0's incompatibility with other
plug-ins is disappointing to me, my primary use for the program will be
audio recording and mixing -- the stuff I did back when the program was
still just CoolEdit. I want to be able to record multiple vocals over
each other, edit minute things in the vocals, and mix them in a way
that sounds seamless -- without any crashes or glitches.

There are two different versions of 1.5 on amazon, and I meant to ask
about this as well:

One of them, which is only available through the "used & new" option
for a higher price than 2.0, has an icon that says Windows 2000 /
Windows XP. Since I have Windows XP, this is the one I would get -- if
it was in the warehouse for a lower price.

The second version of 1.5 is available in the warehouse for $250 -- but
it says "No Operating System." The product is "Adobe AUDITION 1.5 WIN
1U ( 22011118 )" and I am confused by this. Is there a difference
between these two products, and will this second version work on my
computer? I had sort of assumed that it wouldn't.

I agree!
It looks to me like they are trying to "Premier'ize it" for lack of a
better term.

To be honest, I'm not sure.
I borrowed a brand new copy from a friend to try it out, installed it
and tinkered around but since the interface was confusing and plugins were
not working correctly I removed it. He is running it with no troubles, but
he doesn't have the number of plugins that I have.
I've been a registered Cooledit user since Cooledit 95 but this one I just
can't warm up to.

Works fine for me when I paste the pieces back into IE.
Or just go to Amazon and see the user reviews of AA 2.0,
nothing particularly special or magic about the URL.

AFAIK there have been only one version of each release level of CEP and
Audition.

IOW if its labelled Audition release 1.5 then it nets out to be the same
thing as anything else labelled Audition release 1.5.

Of course for every release there are both full-product and upgrade
versions, which differ only in the obvious way.

Well yes they are negative reviews. I see them as supporting my long-held

I suspect Adobe are guilty as you charge.

Part of my day job is
designing User Interfaces, so I may be a bit more
sensitive to this than others?

My approach is to learn the new UI well enough that I'm not suffering with
withdrawal symptoms from the old one and then make up my mind, as if that
will matter. Audition 2.0 is what it is.

I am particularly troubled by the reports about the
shortcut keys as I use a customized set quite extensively
to do repetitive tasks for both audio production (speech
and music) and for video "sweetening".

I see 2.0 as adhering more closely to Windows keyboard, mouse and command
standards.

I believe I will download the trial version and try it

this is not the end of the line of usable versions.

Good idea. The two versions cohabit well.
