Default RME Fireface 400 and Mac

Nobody picked up on my broad questions about interfaces, so I'll make
it easier and only ask about RME.

1) Does the Fireface 400 work well on Mac now. I've heard that in the
past it was a problem.

2) Are the mic pre's in the Fireface 400 the same as the 800? They
don't talk about a Class A stage in their literature like they do with
the 800. Are the 400's mic pre's as good?

3) Latency - is the latency low enough to monitor the signal coming
through the unit without hearing the delay (if you can also hear the
live instrument at the same time)? Is it as low as other firewire
units (like MOTU)? Is there significantly more latency than with the
PCIe card based units?

Thanks,
Ken Winokur

Can't answer your questions, but aren't the price diff between the two
too small not to go for the 800?
Don't remember all diffs, but the 800 has a few nifty's over the 400.

I was about shopping a used 800, but being on a budget settled for a
used Multiface for my home gear.

It's not really a question of price but of size and power source.
This is for a portable unit (different from my studio setup - but
possibly added on). I fly around all the time with a ton of
equipment. I always bring my computer in a bag. The Fireface 400
would fit in the bag - the 800 would not. I'm also thinking about the
MOTU Ultralite - which is very light and even a bit smaller (no rack
ears).

The Fireface is obviously a great unit (as is the 800). But I need
some assurance that it's going to work with Mac and Digital Performer
seemlessly.

Everythining I've heard about the MOTU Traveler,http://www.motu.com/products/motuaudio/traveler, is a rave. And it can be
powered by the FireWire interface of a Mac.

My website will be up soon with a lot of my old articles that never
got published.

anyway, to the question in hand, digital performer is tested on all
the MOTU products so that should be a better deal if you're going for
compatibility issues that may arise. Also, Electronic Musician awarded
it the Editor's Choice 2007 as Best Audio Interface, so i doubt if
you'll go wrong there.

RME's FireFace is rock solid though. With its SteadyClock clocking to
remove jitter and provide great sound throughout and really good
converters to match. There's not much technical information from
MOTU's site to compare the tech specs but RME has been making
exceptional converters and interfaces for the high end market for
quite some time now and I would trust them with any of their products.
