There is a Mythbusters (cable TV) program that readers of this newsgroup
would enjoy. They investigated whether a car audio system could destroy
a car with LOUD sound in a single "listening" session. All agreed that
damage could occur over long periods of time through loosening of body
parts not to mention loss of hearing.

Part of the program showed some car-audio clubs that specialized in
getting the loudest sound possible regardless of quality; 170-180DB. The
Mythbusters gutted a car, built a steel coned speaker with 51" diameter,
mounted it in the floor, attached the cone to the drive shaft with a
camshaft linkage, and ran the speaker with the diesel engine.

The speaker did not survive more than about 2-3 minutes of use but was
measured to put out 170DB at 16Hz. The only damage to the car was that
the sun roof blew out. Once the air seal was broken on the car, no other
damage occurred.

A very funny and interesting episode!

Hard to imagine sound waves doing any more damage
than driving over a mile of washboard gravel road.
