Fireport Won't Connect
Hey guys!
Got a used Fireport earlier this year from ebay and sadly didn't get a chance to try it out until now...and it won't work. It fires up, has power, powers the drive, but the software always says that it can't see any drives connected. I've tried this on Mac as well as PC...does anyone know if there's any tricks I'm missing here to get this to work? Used both the HDtools app as well as the native app that Alesis released. Any help much appreciated!! Thanks, Sig |

Fireport Won't Connect
I've tried several cables, 3 macs and 2 PC's...is there something else I'm missing with these units on making them work?

Could be that, while the leads that provide power are OK, but there's a break in one of the data wires or a bad connection at the connector. Both the Mac and PC (from at Windows XP on, though I don't know about Windows 10) have Firewire drivers so unless there's something odd about the Fireport, there should be no need for a special driver. But with an obsolete product, one never knows. -- For a good time, call http://mikeriversaudio.wordpress.com |

Since you already know about and have tried different versions of the Alesis software (the format and file system that the HD24 uses is quite different from a Mac or PC), I don't know what else might be missing - other than a working Fireport. With the same symptom with different cables and different computers, it's not likely a cable or port problem. But just for verification, do you have some other Firewire device you can connect to the computer and be sure that it works? I don't know what kind of trickery there is in the Fireport hardware, but just on a lark, can you put a Windows or Mac drive with some files on it in an Alesis carrier, plug that into the fireport, and see if your operating system can recognize it? It's kind of a long shot, but if it lets you see the "normal" files and not the Alesis files, that might suggest something, though I'm not sure what. -- For a good time, call http://mikeriversaudio.wordpress.com |

Is the HD24 connected, and does it have a HDD plugged in ? Something I saw on the interweb somewhere suggested that there must be a HDD there before anything will show up at all. geoff |

Fireport Won't Connect
Success on OS update! Thanks for that.
However, drive is still not reading using the FirePort... Can someone send me known working versions of both FstConnect and HDtools? I have various versions that will work for PPC or Intel, but I can't get any of the FstConnect versions to install at all... Thank you! Fireport Won't Connect
I don't know why, but that version of FstConnect crashes when installing on the last version of Tiger, and even though it says it works on Leopard, it says "can't install on this OS"...I've tried it on 4 different types of Mac systems now using various versions of Leopard installed...?

Any help much appreciated!! Thanks, Sig When I was a maintenance engineer for a tv studio, manufacturers claimed that you could plug in firewire cables when the equipment was powered up. That led to many blown firewire ports until I convinced users that claim was bs. You could very well have a blown port. This could very well be...it wouldn't be on the computer side, because I've now tried 6 different Mac and PC systems, all with known working FW ports, but it could be that both ports on the FirePort are damaged and I was sold a known non-working unit... |

It's not the data part of the Firewire port that blows up when hot-plugging, it's the power part. Disk drives are usually not a problem, but some devices have a high enough current surge when connected to a powered Firewire port that a the powering circuitry complains. I don't remember what the spec is, but it seems you can draw a couple of amps (nominal) through a Firewire port, and something could draw considerably more current than that when starting "cold." -- For a good time, call http://mikeriversaudio.wordpress.com |
