bew solution for old problem- singing pianist
I have a singing pianist who I want to record while playing the piano. I've
used keeping the lid shut and covered with blankets, but I want to keep the lid open, at full stick or even off. I've heard of building a "box" or some such structure that fits over the piano between the vocal mic and the strings. I don't know if this was open or closed top. I am looking for suggestions- particularly mechanical, such as the "box"- for keep a reasonable amount of bleed out of the vocal mic. Thanks. |

Seems to me you want to build a mid-sized wall of some non-resonant material, surfaced with sound-absorbant material on both sides. I'm thinking of a couple-three sheets of 3/4" MDF covered with thick layers of Corning 703 on both sides. On the bottom of the piano it would run behind the pedals, on the top it would probably run behind the music stand. Seal it to the piano with weather-stripping rope caulk. |

The pianist wants to be able to fix the vocals? **** him (or her). For that, you'll want the lid closed & the blankets on. |

Give him an electric keyboard to play and cans. If you DO want to record the piano, why the separation fetish? Consider a figure-8 mic for the vocal, and put the piano in the null. Or a hypercard. Etc. -- ha |

Why not learn how to place mics so that the bleed is working for you? It seems to me like creating boundries around things will result in unatural reflections and tonal shifts - I could be wronge. |
