Default Full unit removable?

My JVC SX980 was stolen a while back out of my Honda in front of my
house after I rushed out absent-mindedly and, yes, left the faceplate
on. But now, having replaced it with a new JVC KDG 510, I'm worried
about someone assuming it's a worthwhile car to target, even without
the faceplate, given the number of face-less radios out there on the
internet. Regardless of whether this is the case, is there a reasonable
way to mount the unit in a way where I can take the whole thing out
easily when I go? Of course this will work only as long as I remember
to take it, but I'd like my money to last a little while.

The part about this that's going to be a pain in the ass, is that you
then have to plug in or unplug the deck every time you get in or out of
the car... I say go with the idea of a covor (that the OP had). That
way, you don't have to look like you're trying to steal a stereo every
time you leave your car (which people will probably think is going on
when they see you pulling a head unit out of the dash and walking away
from the car with it.).

Why, when I was your age... We had pull-out stereos! And we where
thankful!

Mine was a $600 sony cd player. It had a metal handle that folded
nicely around the face. I could pull out the entire stereo in seconds.
Of course, I had to cart around this stereo then. It didn't come with
a protective case. Then they invented those removable faces which I
don't like either. My curernt sony head unit beeps at me whenever I
get out of the car to remind me to take the face with me. I never do
it. Maybe I'm lucky. But I've never had a single piece of car stereo
equipment stolen, probably because I tend to drive junkers and people
don't give it a second look..

Me too. Back in 1990 I had a pull-out Kenwood CD player. It had one of
those metal handles on the top. WHAT A PAIN IN THE ASS!!!! I remember
clearly going to movie theaters and you would see all these guys toting
their HU's around with them like some kind of dude-purse. Back then, it was
kind of a status symbol.

But the truth of the matter was that it was a MAJOR pain in the butt and
many people just left their HU's in to avoid the hassle. ALSO, keep in mind
that by toting the ENTIRE CD playback mechanism around there is much, much,
much greater chance of damage occurring (I mean, if you dropped that sucker,
as did frequently happen, those delicate laser-pickup mechanisms were often
ruined). The removable faceplate seemed like a miracle to me for SO MANY
REASONS.

If I were you, I wouldn't be too hasty in trying to recreate this "golden
age". Today's modern CD players WERE NOT designed to be carried around and
jostled about.

If I were you, I would focus on security measures for your car, mainly a
really good alarm system, as well as surveillance systems (I have a closed
circuit TV system set up in my driveway with monitors on my nightstand).
And then, of course, make sure you ALWAYS remove your faceplate when not in
use.

I have had MANY cars broken into over the years, but I have NEVER ONCE had a
car broken into where the alarm was engaged (the the blinking red light was
going). Thieves are lazy. If they see an alarm in place (and activated)
they will move on to the next car. There are always PLENTY of folks out
there WITHOUT an alarm that make much, much easier pickin's.

Why not just remove it and hide it under the seat, or in the trunk?

Heh. I have a 17-year-old Honda with body dings, rust, and pieces
missing out of the hubcaps (taking the "city car" approach you refer to
-- "people don't give it a second look").

I'm not going to carry the whole thing out every time, I've concluded.
But I'm tempted to see if Honda has a gap filler used for empty radio
slots and modding it to cover the faceless radio.

I have an alarm but it doesn't work. Maybe I can get one of those fake
flashing lights.

Last time I checked, Radio Shack had these. Simple to hook up and only
blinked when you shut off the ignition.

I had one of those!! In fact, I had a removable Sony tape player right
before that as well. Those two models (5280 or 5700 or something like that)
were two of the best looking head units I've owned. All black, nice big
buttons, and huge simplistic displays that changed from amber to green. Oh
the days...

Stop being a cheap prick and buy an alarm and protect your car with it as well
as your stereo.

Really? The ones I've seen at Radio Shack are battery operated and are
ALWAYS on which could be annoying for the driver (depending on how you mount
it). I suppose a simple switch could be rigged up that turned the blinking
LED on/off. But if there's one that worked with the ignition, that would be
far easier. However, the one I'm thinking of sells for just a few bucks.

Well, it was a long time ago that I saw one of those there, but YES...it was
a fairly simple unit that had a separate ignition lead wire so that the LED
only blinked when the car was off.

What's with you, Howdy? Most of your posts are courteous are informative,
but every once in a while you let one loose... What the hell??

I have three guesses:

1) You have a substance abuse problem & are prone to mood swings during your
periods of being intoxicated and/or high.

2) Someone is sneaking onto your computer and using it to post here under
your name.

3) Multiple personality disorder.

What's the deal?

How about all of the above.

If I were you, Tony, I would make use of your recently discovered "block"
function in OE and block Captain Toke (as I have). You can't believe how
much more enjoyable my RAC experiences have been lately without that

I just can't see myself supporting cheese so that someone can save $50 vs.
doing things right. New car alarms are as low as $25 on ebay and another
$15-$20 for a radar sensor. It's funny that people will rush out and replace
their stolen $100+ head unit, but hell with replacing their broken alarm
that's worth $25+. What is the point of a "Fully removable unit " anyways? In
the days of pullout head units people rarely carried them around in shopping
malls and what not, but what they did do is stuff them under the seat as if no
one is going to look there first. Then they would call their insurance only to
find out that their insurance does not cover anything that is not permanently
mounted in the car. In short the answer to your question is #3 Multiple
anti-cheese disorder.

Hey misfit did your wife blow you new audiovox tweeters yet? Funny how you
don't trust Jensen to make a good tweeter, but you have no problem ripping out
a pair of $20 home speaker advent/audiovox/Jensen tweeters and that's totally
fine. Now that I have pointed out again the you're a dumb ass, I guess that
does make me mean-spirited bully.

Tony,

If you want to block Howdy PERMANENTLY (so he can't use his little tricks),
go to Tools, then Message Rules, then News. You want to create a rule that
prevents Howdy messages from getting through. This way, OE looks at the
FROM name, not the entire address and blocks any NAME (this is important)
that contains "Captain Howdy" or "Captain_Howdy", rather than the whole
address.

This is important to know if Bob ever figures out what Howdy did as well.

MOSFET,

Very sorry about your experiences with Captain Howdy. He is really
making an RAC annoying an expierence, but im not going to stop because
of a jackass.I havent been in RAC very long but he is a complete
idiot.I am using Google Groups, i was wondering if anyone knows how to
block people in Google Groups.Maybe if everyone blocks him and bob wald
they will just go away.Again sorry for your problems.

Thanks for the help if anyone knows!

Also I am looking to buy a new HU. I have narrowed my choices down the
the Pioneer DEH-P4800MP and the Alpine CDA-9853. Which has better
features, sound quality, quality in general and which one fo you
recomend. Is there another brand or model of either i should check out?
If so what? and which one is better buy for the money

One more question, I have recenlty installed my stereo i have a
standard cab truck so the rear speakers are about 6 inches above the
floor in the wall behind the seats.Currently i have no speakers in
there. I was wondering if it would make a big difference if i put
another pair of coaxial speakers in there? or would i be better off
putting putting midbass speakers? or should i not wast my money? If i
should put anytype of speakers what brand should i checkout?

Thank you so much for any help and all the help youv been

Wow, Captain. You utterly disgust me. You are a bully, in the truest
meaning of the word. I hope that everyone joins me in giving you a
collective "Go away and never come back". Holy crap. I can't believe you
just did that.

If I were you, Nick, I'd get an attorney and see what your legal options are
at this point.

Captian, you are obviously a person of intelligence, judging by your
resourcefullness. Why is it that you choose to ignore your sense of right
and wrong...do you honestly not know any better? I think you do. Your
mother and father would be ashamed. You owe Nick the biggest apology you
could possibly muster, and even then it wouldn't be enough.

You make me sick.

Wow, Captain. You utterly disgust me. You are a bully, in the truest
meaning of the word. I hope that everyone joins me in giving you a
collective "Go away and never come back". Holy crap. I can't believe you
just did that.

If I were you, Nick, I'd get an attorney and see what your legal options
are at this point.

Default Full unit removable?

Try a product review forum you noob **** face.

I must be the only one that remembers him from a few years ago. When the
name cropped up again, I was leary at first, and then was glad that he
seemed to be providing helpful information and keeping the newgroup
going. I had thought it was possibly an entirely different person. But
now, going back through Google Groups from 2001 or so, it seems he
started the same way then. Tried offering advice and help, but when the
then regulars started pointing out flaws in electrical theory, etc, he
turned into a troll and disappeared for a while.
