Subwoofer lag - how to limit/remove it??
Hi,
First of all - the gory details. Here is my current system (in a 1998 Honda Prelude): Alpine 7394 Head Uint Alpine R-Type 5-1/4 inch front splits Alpine 6x9 rear (nothing fancy, just for rear fill) Alpine 55x4 RMS 4 channel amp (last 2 channels are brideged for the subs) 2 10" MBQuartz sub woofers - running in parallel My problem, as you may have guessed, is lag from the subwoofers. I used to have a single 12" Alpine Type-S sub but it annoyed me so much that I went back to the installer and tried some other options. The 2 10" gave the best sound, but I still get some lag. To me, this seems like more of an installation/setup issue than equipment, since I assume a 10" sub shouldnt be laggy. Since the majority of the music I listen to is techno, this can get very annoying! I have the sub box facing away from the front (ie backwards) and have the crossover on the amp set to 90hz - any higher and the bass gets very boomy and muddy. I cant think of anything else to try.. has anyone got ideas on how to reduce the lag? My deck has time correction - I am planning on delaying the signal to every speaker by a couple of milliseconds in the hope that the subwoofer channel is independent of the time correction. If that doesnt work, what will? Regards, Steve |

Subwoofer lag - how to limit/remove it??

im tringto fingure out ur "lag" conception. expalin excatly waht the problem is/ is the highbass/lowmid range not blening, is bottom end not loud enough? or is it the the subwoofers wont keep up with faster paced beats? It's just what it sounds like. Subwoofers are typically in the trunk, which means it's a few millisecond before their sound reaches the front of the cabin. Your mids and highs are up front. The result is that the bass is delayed, and the sound is muddied. The answer is to either locate your subwoofers up front (See Earl Zausmer), or delay your front speakers a few milliseconds. Just wondering, but it is possible for you people posting from caraudioforum.com to please quote? It's usenet protocol, and it's common courtesy. These threads get thick, and if you don't quote, nobody knows what you're talking about. -- Lizard teamROCS #007 / Technical Director / Founding Member *res derelicta* http://www.teamrocs.com/ Save Farscape http://www.watchfarscape.com |

Subwoofer lag - how to limit/remove it??

I doubt you could hear the few 100ths of a second delay from the short distance between the speakers. although, if you wanted, you could possibly use a delay circuit on the front speaker amplifier. You can hear it if you know what you're looking for. However, most people never notice. A ms is far too short for the average listeners nervous system to respond, and the human aural faculties are adept at processing input before it reaches our concious mind. If it didn't, you couldn't tune out annoying sounds! However, if you know what to look for, you'll notice it. People can be coached to recognize delay (but then, people can be coached to perceive things that aren't there, as well). It's all academic though. 98% of listeners out there don't notice it, and 1% are lying when they do. -- Lizard teamROCS #007 / Technical Director / Founding Member *res derelicta* http://www.teamrocs.com/ Save Farscape http://www.watchfarscape.com |
