Another Mic Shootout
Here's an interesting mic test. I'm surprised how muddy the 44BX is and
how bright the 77DX is. The levels are not normalized. I don't know what preamp he used, and I assume he did not do any processing. Some of the mics have settings that he didn't specify. https://youtu.be/CdLRA3Z09tE I'm hearing some distorting. Is it in the recording or my system? |

Ribbon mics have huge proximity effect = bass boost when close speaking. The ham has a **** awful voice and no clue how to record. I'm hearing some distorting. Is it in the recording or my system? ** There is obvious peak clipping on some samples of speech - ie the BX44 for one. Yawwnnnnnnn .... ...... Phil |

Is it in the recording or my system? This is an interesting shootout because the guy is badly eating the mike. Which is probably not a bad thing for communications mikes, but as you can hear the 44BX does not lend itself to jamming your lips right up against it. And yes, there is clipping on all of these. But that is less disturbing to me than the plosives. Notice that some of the communications mikes like that Shure 550 actually do very well when eaten. They are designed for that. I would really like to have heard an SM58 which is similarly able to be abused that way. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |
