Default Meter repair shop?

Roger Kennedy (a tube tester technician of some repute) has told me a
meter with an open circuit can not be repaired. I'm hoping he's wrong.
Can anyone recommend a shop that can re-wind the coil in my AVO's
meter?
Thanks

A couple of things:

a) It depends on where the circuit is 'open'. Typically it is at the
connections, not in the body of the coil.
b) If you can somehow re-make that connection, you could repair the
problem. I have no idea how accessible the meter movement might be in
that unit, but if you can get to it, and unwind the broken end one
turn, you just might be able to re-solder - and one winding is not
going th make a whit of difference.

But, with any VOM, you should be able to derive the parameters of the
meter and find an appropriate substitute even if not identical to what
is there. Analog or digital. All that would remain is for you to redo
the scale.

Patience and good luck with it!

Bitching?? I simply asked for someone to recommend a meter repair
shop. Yes, I've received some thoughtful and much appreciated advice,
but as of yet no one has said "try calling....".

I want you to show some effort in
doing what it took me twenty minutes to do with no more tools than a
phone book and Google.

A google search for "meter repair shop" brings up 425,000 hits. At 1st
glance none at the top of the list seem very relevant to my quest. It
does not strike me as particularly unreasonable or selfish to take up
some RAT bandwidth hoping that someone might have some real world
experience with a meter repair shop they might be willing to share.
But I do suppose my time might be better spent wading through those
425,000 hits than responding to a troll so obvious as this.

Yep that does happen, I take it that you have put a DVM or something
accross the meter to be sure the thing is DOA?
(I mean with the tester running and testing something so you can read
some voltage accross the meter)
anyway if it is dead you have nothing to lose, take it apart!!. It
has to be done, be careful, use an eyeglass and I am sure you will
find the problem.

I knew I recently bought those jeweler's loupes at the thrift store
for *some* reason.
Thanks for the encouragement. I'll post back with a hoo-rah if it
works out.
Ethan

PS- this meter isn't from a VOM as some in this thread seem to assume.
It's from a MkIII valve characteristic meter, thus my seemingly deep
emotionally investment in getting it to work. Thanks for all the
advice.

From the few pics I've seen that I *think* are from their multimeter,
they appear different.

*DID you contact AVO first?

No, didn't know they were still in business. I'll try that.

*Next, DID you call the local _avionics shops_ or the local _power
company metrology department_, as I swore I suggested?

No, and I do recall you suggesting it before. My oversight. I'll be
pursuing it first thing Monday. Thank you for your valuable advice and
information.
