Usually, one can figure the specs for a power transformer for a receiver by looking at the power output, filter cap voltage specs, etc. There are proabably going to be a number of secondary windings. Usually the transformer is so complex that it would be hard to find one that is similar enough and fit inside well enough, eaxct for an exact replacement from Sony. Given the low replacement cost of the receiver, you'll probably pay at least half the price of a new receiver for Sonty's exact replacement transformer. |

The cost of a new transformer is very high, it's usually not worth the trouble to replace them. From your description, it seems like the primary is open. You can easily confirm this with an Ohmmeter. Most similar transformers have a thermal link or fuse inside to help prevent fires. These links are often the cause of open primaries. You may be able to find and repair the link but there are two considerations: First, the link has been installed for safety. If you want to assume the risk, repairing the link may be possible. Second, the link may have opened because the transformer overheated. This could be caused by driving the unit too hard for an extended period, poor ventilation, or a shorted output stage or power supply. If any of these are true, the new transformer will eventually fail also. ----------------------------------------------------------- spam: wordgame:123(abc):14 9 20 5 2 9 18 4 at 22 15 9 3 5 14 5 20 dot 3 15 13 (Barry Mann) [sorry about the puzzle, spammers are ruining my mailbox] ----------------------------------------------------------- |
