Default recording music from basic cable vs. digital

I record music videos off tv (VH! or MTV) from basic cable to
videotape, then transfer to my PC to be edited. The audio sounds great
and so that's how I get the latest music.

When my next-door neighbor got Comcast Digital cable, I was thinking
the audio quality would be even better.

He let me record to videotape a few songs from the "metal" music
channel (I think it's channel 909).

When I transferred them to my PC, there was a very distinct "tape hiss"
on the music which didn't appear on recordings made from basic cable
service.

I cannot figure out why my basic cable gives cd-quality audio, but
recordings from digital music cable subscriptions suck. The audio from
the tv speaker doesn't have this "hiss" that appears when I transfer to
my PC. Can someone explain? Do i need some sort of filter between the
digital cablebox and the vcr? Thanks in advance.

When you did this, did you use your VHS tape recorder or his? Your regular
VHS tape or his?
