Default monitoring scenarios for PT LE.

For the time being, I'm recording with PT LE. The players need to be
able to monitor effectively in a couple of ISO booths. To overcome
latency for the players, my workaround is to patch mics into channels
on a Mackie board before the preamps -- Then I send from the channel
direct outs into a firewire or a lightpipe preamp. I use the effects
sends to route signal to personal submixers for the players.

This workaroun is not so great - the power supply has a proprietary
cable and a fan -- so the door to my quiet room has to stay ajar for
the power supply!

So I either have to
a) jump up to PT HD - which is rather more $$ than I have at the
moment -
or b) get into some preamps with close to zero-latency monitor
outputs. -
or c) swap out the Mackie board for something with channel direct outs
- but without a fan. -
or d) some monitoring scenario I haven't considered...

Suggestions? TIA.

Louis

Are you on PT USB hardware? If so, the PTLE FW stuff (DIGI 003) has
negligible latency.

Have you tried going to the track menu and enabling "input only
monitoring" on the tracks in record? They don't get the personal
submix, but that should give you the same result (monitoring the
input) without the repatching hassle.

All that info and you don't mention what PT LE hardware you're using.
Would be helpful to know.

What latency? There is no appreciable latency in a PTLE FW system. Are you
using USB?

There certainly can be appreciable latency in an LE FW system. If the
buffers are not set low enough, there will be latency.

The "musical" latency of the input is usually low enough so
that you can play pretty much in time if you have to monitor
what's coming out of the D/A converter instead listening to
the input, but there's always some delay. When listening to
your own voice on headphones through the input/output chain,
you can usually hear the effect of comb filtering due to the
acoustic and electric sources combining at your eardrum.

The usual fix (or it's already the case so it's never
noticed) is to turn up the headphone volume so that it
swamps out what you hear through your normal throat-to-ear
connection. That's often too loud for some singers who
aren't belters, but good for belters.

Long answer: If I lick a light socket, I can expect a shock if the socket is
hot. Any piece of gear not operated properly can be expected not to work
properly.

Short answer: Yah think?
