Tube-microphone SE Z 5600 A background noise...?
I bought SE Z 5600 A Tube-microphone some years ago. It's sound quality
itself is very pretty, a little old-fashioned, such a sharp, but more warm, as like the large-capsel tube-microphones can be. Especially for the low-price like SE:s are. problem is the background-noise. Is it possible, that the such a strong "hissing" comes from the double-triode? In this microphone, there's no other active-components at all - only capacitors, resistors and so on. The double-triode -type is ECC 83A, maybe made in China, manufacture is SE Electronics, who will really know, who and where this is really made... Do any of you have got some experience to get lower background-noise only to change this ECC 83 double-triode to the tube made from another manufacturer? There exist some other one, but which trade marks could be less noisy? Thanks for the answers -Pentti |

A lot of it is probably from the tube, which really isn't a very good design choice for that application anyway. Some of it is thermal noise from resistors. It's as much a design problem as an implementation problem though. You can purchase tubes that have been hand-selected for low noise, or you can buy a box of 20 tubes and select one yourself out of the set. I would suggest trying whatever your local shop has available, although I am personally very partial to the JJ brand tubes, which are clean and quiet and available in the $5-$10 range. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra.
