Relating only to other experience.... is there not both an
"input" and an "Auto-input" option? On most gear that I'm
familiar with, "input" means you're constantly hearing the
input to that channel and not the track. But "auto-input"
allows for listening to the existing track until you punch.

There is a selection in the preferences as I recall for playing record
enabled tracks. You also have to set a track to playback for regular
purposes in the tracks/waveform window.
