Default Any way to isolate the vocal on VHS tape audio recording?

The VHS tape recording consists of electric piano, drum, electric
guitar, and vocalist.

The vocalist is drowned out by other instruments.

I can hear the vocalist but the signal is weak, because he did not sing
close enough to the microphone.

Is there a way to strengthen the vocal?

Yeah, turn up the equalization in the frequency range of the vocal, or turn
down the equalization in the range of the other instruments, or a little of
each.

If perchance the vocalist was equally mixed into both channels, then do a
little channel matrixing and boost L+R and cancel signals that appear only
in either channel.

No, not really. A little fast compression can help things sometimes,
by pulling down the levels of things with rapid peaks (which are mostly
instruments). But I suspect from your description that this is mostly
a hopeless case.

Did you use an on-camera microphone? That's always a recipe for bad sound.

If you can find somebody with a copy of Adobe Audition, it has a
pretty good processor that will isolate or strengthen a vocal.

I don't know how you can put just the audio back on the tape though -
may be better to transfer it to DVD.
