el-opto/caps?
I made a el-opto type compressor from a kit, it compresses in a cool sustainy, punchy way, but it sounds like eggs are being scrambvled in the background when I push the fader up. would better quality caps help reduce the noise? what brand?

Probably not. What are the active electronics like? If you disable the opto completely, is it just as noisy? --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |

Probably not; unless they're grossly defective, caps don't generate serious noise problems. Look at the active devices, the optocoupler, and resistances in the circuit. Peace, Paul |

Very unlikely to be caps, what made you think so ? What brand / model is the opto ? I thought so because it was a guess, I don't know much. It's a midwest analogue whisper compressor. hi Graham, the fader is the fader on my board, Uhuh. Is it before or after the signal to the compressor though ? And ! What signal level is going to the compressor ? Can any better opto from the site mentioned below work as a replacement without having to modify the existing circuit? You need to check the on resistance and led current. Basically yes though, although you might get better results by using one of the new lower resistance optos with suitable circuit mods. One of the NSL-32 series looked like a candidate. I've used them in my own designs and know they work well. can I snail mail you a schematic? You can't scan it ? I'll email you a contact address. Graham |
