SRS WOW Filter in Windows Media Player
I apply this effect on raw 2 mic live stereo recordings i make at the
jam i play at, and playback is like 5x better than dry. The bass comes to life, seeming to only boost the bass guitar without making the whole recording sound boomy. The enhanced stereo separation makes the whole recording more vibrant. Things sound kind of "spongier" and more pleasant. How can I get this effect on my wav tracks so i can burn it to CD this way? Is there a combination of effects I can use, or is this some proprietary algorhythm that I won't be able to get near in my simple post-production phase. Thanx for time, Mark |

I liked the effect for casual listening when done with subtlety(SP?) Nice, wider stereo and found the bass boost was quite acceptable. I guess if you could get hold of one of the little hardware items you would be able to process it as an insert. I plan on keeping mine should I ever find it in the storage hell! Rv! |

I'd personally suggest you investigate better microphone placement than gimmicks like SRS. How can I get this effect on my wav tracks so i can burn it to CD this way? It is proprietary, but you can buy an SRS plug-in from whoever owns it (not Hughes any more). I believe they are calling themselves SRS Labs. There are also some outboard Hughes boxes out there on the used market. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |

SRS WOW Filter in Windows Media Player
Ever since 2001 MS media player has SRS WOW . Sometimes its buried in
the UI like on the smartphone I'm working on. IMHO its a nice way to force tiny, close together audio systems Laptops, Phones, boom Boxes to sound "bigger ,deeper & wider than they physically should. I don't think this would be very good idea on conventional real playback systems. Could lead to some very odd exagerations of EQ harmonics and phase. Kevin Tracy |

I find that these recordings need something to spice them up. We generally have guitars that are too loud, bass that is not loud enough, and only the vocals going through the pa, and there is no soundman. The effect can be scaled down using a slider. The enhanced stereo image makes this feel like a "real" recording. The bass it adds bring the bass up to where it should be, or maybe even a little too much, but that is adjustable as well. The would be a great option in my car. As far as mic placement, I don't think that is going to overcome the mix that is happening live. I would really like to keep my chain all digital until I go to CD. I could just play the track in real time through the media player and record it coming back in, but my A/D converters are just the stock ones on my mother board. It would be double slammed by these cheap converters. |
