I have a Lawson L251, which I like, a friend has the Sound Delux 251, sure
would like to get the "Tele", and do a shootout. I'm not holding my breath
though.

Probably the most expensive mic in the solar system is the one attached to
the Titan probe that landed a year or so ago.

Peace,

I don't think it's fair to include shipping costs in the price comparison.

Is the mic itself that expensive?

I doubt it. Sounded a bit harsh in the high end to me.

But that could have been due to the liquid methane rain...

Actually, this is an interesting question: when is a pressure transducer
a
microphone? Is it a function of its intended use, its frequency response,
its
pressure range, etc?

Every microphone is a pressure transducer......

And: The Sony C800G is quite expensive too....

But not every pressure transducer is a microphone.

Then again, not every microphone is a pressure transducer. Consider
this: http://www.bksv.com/default.asp?ID=4000
An accelerometer can be used as a mic.

Hearsay: Once upon a time a 251 in very fine condition could draw up to
$50,000.

Then the very good clones arrived (Lawson, Soundelux, etc) and the price
dropped to around $5,000.

Also, the Asian currency crisis helped a lot too. Many of those high dollar
microphones were going to collectors in Japan who all of a sudden could not
afford them.

Same thing happened to Fairchild 670s. You can pick one up for $12,000 now.

I remember offering a guy $250 for a BK-5, and being told that I was insane
and that he could sell them for three times that in Japan. He can't any more.

I believe it was either a Knowles or a Gentex capsule. The gold-plated
Gentex capsules used to be real favorites for military applications.

No, some are velocity transducers.

It's a cardioid, so it's neither a true pressure nor velocity sensor, but
a combination of the two.

SNIP

If it has usable response up to 4 KHz, it's a microphone. If it can't
reproduce an intelligible voice, it's something else.

That said, you can KIND of get intelligible voice from an oil pressure
sending
unit.

Or $150 from Universal Audio. I don't know how close it is to the actual
hardware, but it's the only thing I use on vocals now.

Which UA model are you referring to for $150? Or did you mean $1500?

Don't I wish they had a hardware 670 for $150!

You know, I never liked the way the 670 sounded, and it was always a
severe maintenance headache. I could see a plug-in version being more
useful than the real thing.

I suppose if you can afford one, you can probably afford to have a tech
available.

$1500 seems like a lot of money for a mike whose list price was under $300
just a few years before. Sheesh.

I don't understand why every studio doesn't have a great vintage mic
considering it is one of the FEW fine audio pieces you can buy, use it
maximum benefit, and actually make money on at the same time.

Because most studios today are run by folks who started out _after_ the
mike prices started going through the roof. The folks who bought their
U67s for $300 (and complained bitterly about Gotham's markup in the
process) aren't selling them if they can avoid it, too.

The reason is that there is a limited and constant supply (in spite of
some folks out there making forgeries and frankensteins out of spare
parts which are being sold as vintage mikes), and an ever-increasing
demand.

$1,500 in inflation-adjusted dollars is about $3,375 (+125%)
That means your 25 year investment in that microphone has earned a whopping
0.7% (less than 1%) interest compounded annually after inflation.

It's still a great investment in terms of value and use.
