Hello!

I was just wondering if a device existed that would let me convert my
speakers into wireless speakers? Since I live in a rental, I can't go
drilling holes in the walls and the wires are getting a little
annoying to deal with b/c we have a surround sound set up, and a
weirdly shaped living room.

Yes, but to do a good job, it will become a relatively expensive
project. Essentially you need a radio transmitter, receiver and
amplifier for each channel you want to convert. I'm not aware of any
single product that will do this but, there are cheap, inferior and
relatively good, but expensive professional devices that can be lashed
together to do the job.

If you want a DIY (Do It Yourself) project, look into wireless FM
transmitters. There are a few inexpensive kits on the market. Using a
stereo FM transmitter and a retired stereo receiver, you could
accomplish your goal.

Wireless microphone transmitters could be adapted to do this. (You
would need two transmitters and a stereo amplifier.)

I haven't actually used the unit, but Linksys has announced a wireless
music server. It may be possible to strap two of these units together,
along with a stereo amplifier, and convert your rear speakers to
wireless. A side effect of this arrangement may be the ability to
listen to your stereo through a wireless network. (remember, I haven't
actually tried this and I don't know if they anticipated their wireless
links being used in this way)

The first scheme is very inexpensive. (note that nearby neighbors could
also listen to your rear channels if they discover your transmitter)
Currently, the Linksys system would cost almost $400.00. If you have
wall to wall carpet, hiring a carpet installer to make your wires
disappear would be cheaper. It may also be cheaper to damage the walls,
hide the wires, and repair the damage when you move.

I don't like to use it, but there is a flat speaker wire that can be
run under carpets or behind baseboards.
