What's the purpose of the "external processor" inputs and outputs on a
integrated amplifier? is it for the preamp? usally the input for the pream
is "main in"...

The external processor loop is usually placed before the volume control,
while preamp out / main in are located after it.

Such a loop allows to add for instance an external Dolby Surround decoder,
an equalizer or a number of other pieces of gear.
