Anyone selling a CD online? What merchant account do you use?
I hope to be selling a novelty CD online soon. Anyone here marketing their
wares online? What do you use as a merchant account? The absolute cheapest way seems to be Paypal. Anybody gone that route and/or see any problems with it? Yahoo seems to have a good deal for small businesses also, anyone ever used them? Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- To reply by e-mail remove the obvious. |

Try "Selling Cds online" below.
http://www.a-lyric.com/mp3music.html Concerning PayPal and Yahoo, I would definitely opt for PayPal as it is far easier and cheaper to start with. Selling CDs is not easy, so keep the expenses in rein in the early days. Michael http://michael-leahy.indiegroup.com Doc wrote in message hlink.net... I hope to be selling a novelty CD online soon. Might be worth having a look at recordstore.co.uk as they do a deal
where they will: 1: Have it in their store 2: Distribute the product 3: Take the money and transfer to you 4: Allow you to have a "mini" on-line store (check out some of sites of the labels they have listed). Obviously they take a slice of the pie (not sure how much %), but it takes away the agro of setting up your own store, messing around with the merchant stuff and sending CD's out. Oh and I think they may charge some kind of storage fee (worth checking). Good luck! Brian "Doc" wrote in message thlink.net... I hope to be selling a novelty CD online soon. Soundclick's CD selling services seem pretty good to me. I think it's $3.95
per month, then you keep 100% of the money from the sale. I haven't used them yet though, so don't take this as being from experience! Does anyone actually buy CD's from Soundclick though?

Doc,
I've used CD Baby (http://www.cdbaby.com) with great success. Ah yes, CD Baby. A co-worker of mine got their Christmas promo CD - something like 100 MP3's. We did a large communal order at the start of the year. Good website, friendly staff and quick shipping. I can't really fault them from a consumer point of view. Their setup looks pretty straightforward, I was thinking about them for maybe selling a CD of stuff too. The only problem we had was when the bloody order arrived and was sucked into the German customs system for - wait for it - a month!! Because the value of the shipment was so large it didn't slip in under the radar. Customs swore they sent a notification to us, but we never received it. I eventually went down there. The Zollamt (customs office) is a *model* of German buerocracy; I had to wait 15 minutes before someone slid a little window open to see me, then another 15 while they went to find the package; 10 minutes filling out paperwork, then they gave me a number, snatched the package back out my hands, told me to go to the Cashier along the hall, and snapped the window shut again. I swear I passed a cob-webbed skeleton holding the remnants of a number only two or three earlier than my own. I paid the cashier the customs (I swear it was the same guy with a different hat), and after extracting their pound of flesh, he went off for 10 minutes, returning finally to thrust the mangled package into my hands. I staggered out into the sunlight and thrust the package aloft as (imaginary) strains of Fanfare for the Common Man played. The inlays were a bit crinkled but the disks themselves were undamaged. -John |

"Brian Philipson" wrote in message ... Does anyone actually buy CD's from Soundclick though? Now that's good question. Where do most people get their sales from. I assumed they'd be prominently from, say, promoting on Soundclick, then it does OK in the charts, attracts attention then...sale. Is this not how most people get their sales? Or by having a CD requested, and so refering them to the site. Why would someone be more likely to buy through CDBaby than Soundclick? Dave Lawrence www.soundclick.com/davelawrence |

You bring up an interesting point. If you are serious about selling physical
objects on the web, it might be an idea to work through a US and a European retailer to avoid this sort of problem - which is relatively rare but infuriating. When we finally get round to it, we will put a permanent ad on ebay
and do it that way, accepting cheques and paypal. Works out much less than CDbaby which take 35% if I recall right!!!! Just stick a link on to your website to ebay and off you go! Any thoughts., as I have not done it yet!! dAVE |

Hmmm isn't there another site http://www.cdstreet.com ? I have not tried them. I think they charge a set up fee and probably want a buck or 2 but so does amazon/cdnow. The key is you get to ship the cds you don't have to send them to some crappy wearhouse in jersey to collect dust, at least the last time I checked. Not sure about their s&h. Places like amazon charge way too much for that. |

I've just heard some bad things about CDstreet not paying the artists their
due revenues. I would steer clear of them for the time being. They're probably run out of a garage by 2 pimple headed college kids. I mean after IUMA was sold they told the artists their music would be placed on napster I think and we'd get $$$, I don't think that happened. MP3 started out as an artist friendly site but one soon learned it was corrupt throughout. WWW artists jump from one to another after the former changes(ie; ampcast). Now I still don't like the idea of the middle man. When you have something to sell and often case ship the middle man ruins it. Yes he offers a website with a certain amount of credibility(amazon) but it's just not logical. Not everyone has ebay or trusts online artists enough to give out credit card info or even send checks. I think one of these art orgs should create a free site for artists. They would simply handle the merchant account. William |

I have used PayPal for the past two years and have had no problems. If
you have your own site I personally believe this is the best way to go. There is no recurring subscription you have to pay to PayPal, setup is simple and their commission is quite favorable. If you don't sell anything in six months you don't have to pay anything. ... (I do not work or am associated with PayPal in any way) ... also .. You can build your own web presence and bring people to your web site instead of assiciating it with a service (many go out of business unfortunately) ... my two cents .. 2hp http://www.twoheadedpuppy.com "Doc" wrote in message thlink.net...
