stereo TRS to 2 XLRs, having trouble
i'm making a y cable. it is a stereo TRS unbalanced (T-left R-right)
to 2 XLR'S. the shield wire from the TRS splits to go to pin 1 of each XLR. should i connect the signal wire (T and R) to pin 2 on the respective XLR connectors and put a jumper between pins 1 and 3 of each XLR connector? i want to make sure i'm doing this right.. |

Yes. That should work into just about any XLR input. Are the levels correct? You're not trying to connect a headphone jack to a pair of mic inputs, are you? |

No, its a monitor out from a mixer to a combiner box that feeeds my monitors. levels should be ok. Thanks mike, I'm glad i guessed it right on the first try.. |

Have you tried the simple solution and just paralleled the tip and sleeve, then connect that to Pin 2 of an XLR, and the shield to pins 1 and 3? Or do you need to keep the output stereo because it goes to something else? In which case, I trust your combiner is active, essentially a mixer. |

Left and right. Port and starboard. i need to keep it stereo--my combiner is passive 4x2 with transformers. i have mixer monitor going to 2 outputs and a y split from my converter input feed to the other 2. i just wired everything up and it seems to be working fine, ie nothing buzzing, level seems to be ok. |

It sounds like an insert cable. should i connect the signal wire (T and R) to pin 2 on the respective XLR connectors and put a jumper between pins 1 and 3 of each XLR connector? Depends what you're plugging it into. If you're going into an old-style transformer-coupled device, the ground jumper on the return is absolutely necessary. For most electronically-coupled devices, it's okay but isn't needed. Occasionally you will find an electronically-coupled device where it has to be removed. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra.
