Default What's the "trim" function for in Cakewalk?

In Cakewalk Home Studio 2, regarding audio tracks, along with the
volume envelopes you can draw in, I see there's a couple of ways to
control overall track volume. The volume section itself allows you 6
db over 0 (unity?) and there's a "trim" control that allows 18 db up
or down.

Assuming you've already recorded your tracks at an optimal level, what
would you use this trim control for? What would it do that the volume
control doesn't do?

Thanks.

Doesn't Home Studio have a help file? Here's what Sonar 1's has to say
about it:

"Volume Trim acts like the trim control on a mixer, raising or lowering
the level prior to the volume fader. Volume Trim is useful for
calibrating your faders to match a dB reference level or for aligning
your faders for grouping. The Volume Trim control has a range of -18dB
to +18dB. Raising or lowering the Volume Trim raises or lowers the
apparent volume of the track by that amount without affecting the
actual fader level.

Best and simplest explanation I've read on this subject yet. Thanks.
