Default Audio over DVD video?

Some companies are starting to release audiophile-quality recordings on
audio-only DVDs, which will play in a regular DVD player and are encoded
in 24/96 PCM, I believe. The frequency range of such audio-only
programs is up to 44 kHz or something. The quantization is incomparably
superior to Redbook 16 bit.

Do such recordings actually sound better than regular CDs? Is this dark
horse format the real winner of the SACD/DVD-Audio tussle?
