Default Regarding: 6 speakers 1 powered mixer

(Michael Henson) wrote in message . com...
For an up and coming gig my band are hoping to connect six speakers
through one powered mixer. Two of these will act as monitors and the
other four will face the crowd.

The problem is that we have no idea how to set up such a system and
whether it would even be safe.

I know the specifcation of one set of speakers and the powered
mixer...

MIXER - 80watts/channel in to 4 ohms (18V RMS), 50watts/channel into 8
ohms (20V RMS), 4 0r 8 ohm load (4 ohms min. load), two speaker output
channels.

EACH SPEAKER OF A PAIR - nominal impedance: 8 ohms power capacity:
200watts

Spec. of other speakers - accept as the same as above but would also
appreciate advice for the system setup if these other four speakers
varied in any way

I would greatly appreciate any advice on setting up such a system as
frankly we have no idea.

Cheers,
Mike.

You've got a few factors to consider here. Is this your normal
rehearsal PA that you're carrying to your gig? Are your singers able
to hear themselves in rehearsal with a PA of such low power output? If
so, then you're probably not a loud band at all, and you might be able
to get your vocals heard in a small room with that PA. But I doubt it.
The other consideration is the load that your amp is presented with.
Since your mixer will accept a four ohm load, then you can safely run
four 8 ohm speakers off it- assuming that your speakers have dual
jacks ( wired in parallel, which every PA speaker I've seen uses ),
you can daisy chain a pair together off each side of the mixer. If you
daisy chain three speakers off each side of the mixer, then you've
decreased the load to 2 ohms a side, which will likely cause the amp
to overheat and shut down ( or die ). You can present the mixer with a
safe load using all six speakers, but you would need to run a pair (
of the three ) per channel off series wiring, which means connecting
the positive of the cable to the positive of one speaker, the negative
of the cable to the negative of the second speaker, and then
connecting the negative of the first speaker to the positive of the
second speaker. Assuming that all six speakers are rated 8 ohms, you
could rig up the series configuration and put 12 ohms on each channel
of the amp, which would be safe for the amp but it would only generate
about 35 watts a channel- pretty low volume.

I wouldn't do any of this. I'd get a decent budget line Crown power
amp ( good for the money, around $250 ), send the line outs of the
mixer into that and use the Crown to feed the house speakers, and I
would use the mixer's built in amp strictly for the pair of speakers
used as monitors. You'll really be happy that you've got the extra
watts at your disposal, for shows and for rehearsals.
