Is there some trick to soldering these? I assumed the connecting wires
are meant to enter the tiny tubes and be soldered in place. I had to
re-end some s-video connectors and the wires were too large to fit. I
ended up soldering to the outside of the hollow pins. That seems like
a hack job and it was kind of a pain. If there's some secret I'm
missing could some one fill me in?

What gauge wires were you trying to solder in? It sounds like you were
using wire too large for the job.

The stranded wire can be reduced in size by reducing the # of strands.
On connectors its better to pre tin only if its going to fit. I also generally
pre fill the sockets, but that would also make pretinning necessary.
The nini DIN connectors I have don't have solder cups. You either
have to put on female contact on the wire to insert to the back
of the DIN, or carefully tach solder each wire to the sides of the
pin. It is a hack job.

I'm not sure the gauge exactly. It comes from off the shelf S-Video
Cable so I thought it ought to work with a Mini DIN. I stripped some
22 gauge stranded wire and was only able to fit two of the dozen or so
strands into the tube. The connectors are Philmore brand. I opened
up the connectors in another S-Video cable I have and it has nice
little cups for the wires. It would have been a piece of cake with
those. Maybe it's just a cheap connector thing?

Philmore is a notoriously cheapo brand, so yes it is possible that a
better quality plug would have easier to use solder points.
