Default sick is relative ...

Hi RATs!

Shiva asked "How sick are you?" Well, not. Not well, that is. Been in
bed mostly for over seven years. Built a bunch of homebrews before
starting to resurrect the dead offerimgs off Ebay.

In the early days, I thought Ebay was somewhere near Oakland,
California.

Couldn't understand why it was such a hot topic on a tube newsgroup.

Still can't.

Happy Ears!

Hi Al

In the early days, I thought Ebay was somewhere near Oakland,
California.

It may well be:-) I often wish I lived in the States, as e-Bay has so much
stuff which the seller will "ship within the US only." I am thinking about
McIntosh amps, and Ampex analogue tape machines.

Couldn't understand why it was such a hot topic on a tube newsgroup.

There's a lot of junk on e'Bay, but one also finds some treasures too.
Good hunting:-)

I agree, you simply have to seek the treasures - caveat emptor. But
eBay in Canada is only 1/10 the size of eBay US, and we have a "picky
border" where the sales tax man pounces on anything over, IIRC, CAN$20
(about US$17) and adds a CAN$5.00 charge for the insult! So I only
buy in Canada but sell to the whole of NA.
What's all this about free trade? Not!
Cheers,
Roger

Hey Roger..
Sorry I couldn't help ya with those 6BM8's...they simply vanished on me.
It's still a mystery.
I'd send ya those two pulls I found for the cost of shipping..which may
be $20 itself, and may not be worth the taxes/hassle.. (do they tax on
shipping?)

The US postal service seems to be a lot slower than goods
from Canada as far as deliveries to the EU are concerned.

Hey Ian -
how 'bout some Ampex tape transports - I've got complete 3 (old trapdoor
headset - tape lifter glass on the door) & 4(the ones where you can swap
headsets on without re-alignining the heads, servo tape lifter glass &
wide - open door for easy editing (assortment of 1/4" head sets, from
original full - track to custom 1/4 track for 3 - series. Also piles of
heads (all those need lapping , but plenty of meat), reel retainers assorted
odds & ends, rebuilt idlers & motors, good capstans & pinch rollers, no
enclosures (i'm not made out of storage, but they're all standard rack size
(they do deem to be happier at about 36% off the horizontal, though,
especially if you're dealing with old tape & **** reels, and makes splicing
& marking easier... I just used an old Simplex theater rack with 4" blank
at the top & a blank for the splicing block 'tween transports and recording
amps.
No original rec. amps left, but have a knight toob & tapesonic SS
recording amps (first *not* rack but has full set of adjustments for rec
/play eq, piles of bias current (can adjust up for newer tape - aligns for
all the tapes I've tried), ok bias traps, lousy (too small) VU meters, dusts
the original toob ampex amps, though nowhere as sexy. Also a Tapesonic
(complete with case), transport & electronics mint (err... first SS, but
sounds real sweet without noise reduction - I can deal wit a slight hiss),
full - modular boards, really "kind" transport (not as quick as Ampex, but
does just fine with full-sized reels. All 7 & 15ips (us 60 hz, you can buy
/ build speed boards for your weird 50Hz mains, Tapesonic's a 2ch 1/2
track, perfect heads, *original manual* (weird, not too many were built),
electronics *claim* to be Premiere, actually one engineer (still alive),
transport by a mad machinist who's no longer with us. Simply, but very
artfully made. Machine work beyond reproach - resembles a 3- "portable"
ampex, but *lighter* (no needlessly heavy crap to make GI's repair the
suckers with a sledge hammer & anadjustable spanner), no stainless steel
overlay (hammer gray - awesome looking). If really interested, I can crate
& put on a slow boat. These are all studio decks, BTTW - you can prob'ly
moor a 25 - footer with one if you don't like the sound.... A bunch of
reels & reel holders, patch bays, snakes etc. available, along with period
racks...
I simply don't have the room to store any longer, and haven't even had
them powered up in a couple of years. If you're seriously interested,
though, *for your own use, not re-sale*, I'll go through them & send you the
alignment curves & wow & flutter specs on bulk-erased 456 tape, and send you
some pics of the things /parts. Oh, the knight (factory assembled with
upgrade mods) is in good, unrestored shape (everything measures well, sounds
good - why waste time?), good cosmetics (looks ugly & consumer - always
did), and Mullards throughout (except for the oscillator toob, i believe -
will look, and see if I have one to complete the "mullardishness", the
mmullards are marked "made for Knight" on top of the logo, the same way
Heath & Dyna are...
Be the first kid on your block!
Have manuals, schematics & alignment papers for everything *but* the Knight
(KP - 70) - if anyone has any lit /schematics, that would be nice...
Have a few pics of the tapesonic *before* restoration, made the page when
I first got it - it looks horrible there, but it's about 98% mint mow.
Oh, and if you scroll all the way down to the bottom of this page, you'll
see the 3-series transport lurking *under the bench*

Happy Ears!
Al

Probably.
He is one of the most cheerful, positive people one could
wish to meet.
