Some CD's have CD Text information on them but by no means all of them.
You can add CD Text to your own CD's with most CD burning software
nowadays - check for CD Text in the help file or manual for your
particular program.

provide the information at burning time.

I recently semi-unknowingly installed a car radio with CD text features, and
was a little surprised when one of my CDs scrolling relevant text on the
player's display while I was listening to it.

We have something similar in Europe in radio (FM) I don't know if you have
it in USA.It's called RDS and in most FM stations you have text displayed on
your boombox or tuner.

There internet database(s) are pretty much standard and called CDDB. There
are a number of online CDDB databases.

My recollection is that Nero was putting CD Text on my discs based on the
filenames of the .wav files, since they did not appear in any standard CDDB

Usually not.

It's possible to embed this sort of metadata in the subcode, but the
method for doing so didn't come along until years after the Red Book
CD standard was finalized - it's an extension rather than a part of
the basic standard.

Most manufacturers of CDs don't seem to bother including it on their
CDs.

Yes, Nero will use the file name as the track name (and artist name as well,
depending on you using the proper naming convention)
Both can be readily edited before burning.

It's Grim down south..
Every new CD I have bought from Sony for the last few years has had CD Text,
as have some from other labels and also every SACD.

My point was that the RecordNow CD burning software wants to go out to a
CDDB database on the internet to get data that it will put as CD-text on
the CD, but it does not let me enter my own text. Seems kind of backwards.

I think that Sony have the patent on CD Text for commercial releases and
only Sony's own pressing plants are allowed to press CD's with CD Text. Do
a web search on Sony-DADC for more details.
