McCartney's Hofner bass settings?
Any Hofner fans out there know McCartney's general bass guitar settings
and chain for recording? In terms of that "Beatles For Sale-Help- Rubber Soul" tone (as well as the Abbey Road tracks that use the Hofner, such as "Something" and "I Want You"), it sounds as though the 500/1 itself has the 'Solo' switch off, 'Bass' on and 'Treble' off (in other words, bass pu only). I can't find good studio photos showing the control panel. Anyone know more complete details? Thanks. ---- Posted via Pronews.com - Premium Corporate Usenet News Provider ---- http://www.pronews.com offers corporate packages that have access to 100,000+ newsgroups |

Work until what you're getting suits your pursuit. A lot to do with any given artist's tone starts with that artist's hands. -- ha Iraq is Arabic for Vietnam |

It's very difficult with Macca because many times he changes his tone by
changing his playing style. As for: You're not going to get anywhere in life copying others. Try using your ears - if you don't have a good musical sense you're never going to amount to anything in this business. I don't know you but if I had the opportunity to hear you I'm sure I could mention a few names you remind me of. Most artists rely heavily on people before them and I think you could do a lot (!!!!!!!!) worse than lending am ear to the Beatles. |

The best chance you might have at finding any of this information is
in The Beatles Recording Sessions by Mark Lewisohn, or Here, There and Everywhere by Geoff Emerick. Mike http://www.pcDAW.net |

I've always been led to belive that McCartney didn't pick up the Rickenbacker until around the Revolver era, and the the first record to feature it was either Paperback Writer or Rain. In response to the original question,... " I don't know. However, I was listening to those Sgt. Pepper 4-tracks that have recently escaped, and I was very surprised at how distorted Paul's bass was when solo'ed. It almost sounds like a tuba at times. I'm thinking that that soft, round distortion was a big part of of Paul's sound, at least in those days. |

Bob Morein (215) 646-4894 You're reading a lot into the post that's not there. At the same time, you're exposing "Bob Morein" as being a straight up ass. Lose the attitude, nitwit. I wasn't talking about copying McCartney's sound for my own use. Every musician has his own sound. I was asking as someone interested in McCartney's bass settings and recording chain. "Bob Morein" = boob. ---- Posted via Pronews.com - Premium Corporate Usenet News Provider ---- http://www.pronews.com offers corporate packages that have access to 100,000+ newsgroups |

Starting with Revolver, McCartney largely used his 4001S. Virtually all of the pre-Revolver material is the Hofner 500/1 (mostly his '63 model, his 2nd one, and the one with the much better pickup design/placement. He used the '61 Hofner on the earliest Beatles' cuts.). The 4001 was used for the large bulk of Revolver, Pepper, and the White Album. He used a Fender Jazz a bit on the White Album and scattered over a few other songs. For Abbey Road, McCartney split the 4001 and the Hofner, and also used the Jazz on one or two songs. All great tones, and all distinct. The Hofner is perfect when it's used on Abbey Road, as in "Something" and "I Want You," and of course, on the earlier stuff like "Day Tripper" and "Drive My Car." There are rumors that I don't think have been substantiated that McCartney used a Burns NuSonic bass for two great bass numbers, Rain and Paperback Writer. I think PW is the Hofner. ---- Posted via Pronews.com - Premium Corporate Usenet News Provider ---- http://www.pronews.com offers corporate packages that have access to 100,000+ newsgroups |
