TOPIC: Do Old Guys Take Better Care of Their Gear?
I've been doing a lot of shopping on Ebay lately and one thing I
consistently see is the term "adult owned", apparently to signify the item was cared for, and in the case of high-power amps and subs, not pushed hard. Now I'm 38 years old, and I PITY anyone who owns my 2 JL 12W3's and my vintage Soundstream Reference 700 amp after me. I LLOOOVVVVEEEE BASS (to my wife's CONSTANT embarrassment). I always have. When I was 15, I got a hold of an Ampeg bass guitar amp (with separate tube power amp head and two 15" speakers) and used it as a powered sub for my stereo in my room. This was before the whole notion of subwoofers caught on. You could hear my stereo literally blocks away. Anyway, I can't speak for others, but I still love playing loud bass. I still listen to those techno bass discs (Techmaster P.E.B., Bass Mekanik, Bass 305, etc.). What about the rest of you oldies (like me)? Or, do most people close to 40 start turning the volume down? Just curious. MOSFET |

I think its the equivalent of the expression for cars: Lady driven.
I know a lot of lady driven cars I wouldn't want to touch. Like my sister's. 34 years old. More power then ever and still love bass. Still have an Epicenter in my car for those older recordings that need a little boost. The only diiferance between now and my younger days is that I have more money to get things done the way I want. I still have all my bass cd's nightmare on bass street, bass 305, dj magic mike, bass the nation, I used to listen to them alot more when my system was more lacking as they tend to be recorded with very little mid range to bring out the low end. If I have someone in the car and I want to rip their head off i'll crank up Ludacris get back, or three six mafia late nite tip, stay fly, or Tru hoody hooo. But as for turning the volume down, I had someone ask me to turn the volume down while stopped in traffic, Had an old man plug his ears when I stopped in front of a bus stop, oh and best of all, almost got kicked out of a drive-inn movie theater because someone complained about my radio being too loud. No tickets yet. You should add Nappy Roots - Headz Up to that list. It's no late nite tip,
but it his pretty good. I'm 21, and I guess my system would be considered "adult owned" because I don't abuse it. Dont get me wrong, I'm always bangin out some bass, but I live on a military base, so I can't play too loud, or I get reprimanded -- - AUSTIN BECKER "Captain Howdy" wrote in message ... 34 years old. 21??? Why you're just a young pup. And I have absolutely no idea what a
"late night tip" is (something given to an IHOP waitress)? MOSFET "Austin Becker" wrote in message news:y9nEf.770516$xm3.645135@attbi_s21... You should add Nappy Roots - Headz Up to that list. TOPIC: Do Old Guys Take Better Care of Their Gear?
The only time in my life that I cranked up the bass and didn't give a second
thought to others' peace and quiet was from about ages 16 to 19. Back in the day (late 80s, early 90s) I had a 1979 Mercury Capri hatchback with three Realistic 12-inch subs in the back in a large, sealed box. Let me tell you it was LOUD!! Anyway, I had a friend that didn't catch the stereo bug until well after I already had, and he had some pretty freakin' loud bass in his vehicle. We would drive around in his vehicle through exclusively residential (apartment complexes specifically) neighborhoods with the volume cranked up all the way. It suddently dawned on me, being a passnger, that most everyone that heard us coming was VERY unhappy, and appeared afraid to say anything to us. Anyway, it was around that time that I realized how selfish, rude and inconsiderate it was to have our stereos playing that loud for no other reason than to "show off". I've been incredibly sensitive to this as I've gotten older and needless to say I'm very respectful of not playing my music too loud around others. As far as turning the volume down, I can definitely say that over the years I've noticed it becoming more and more difficult to hear other people talking to me, especially when there's any considerable amount of background noise (I'm 34). For instance, when I go out to a club it's virtually impossible for me to hear anyone (especially females with higher-pitched voices) when there's loud music playing. Of course, this is a result of loud music in general, not loud bass. My stereo gets so frickin' loud that it's absolutely scary...and I've learned that in order to preserve my hearing I HAVE to turn it down. Oh, yah, the hearing thing. My wife tells me that I am losing my hearing,
but I think she mumbles. In fact, I think everybody mumbles! Nobody EVER talks loud enough. They USED to, but not anymore. But no, I'm not losing my hearing. No way! ahahaha.. I'm still only 18.. I already get told that I'm deaf. I still got

TOPIC: Do Old Guys Take Better Care of Their Gear?
Here's what boiled it down for me.
I used to think that during the day, it was ok to run around with 4 JL 10W0's screaming off of a PPI 1000Wrms amp. I thought that during the day, "F*ck it, nobody's sleeping, so it's cool." Then, I joined the military, and got put on mid shift (3rd shift), and I was sleeping all day. There were a few people around who were doing the same thing that I did, but it became much more pertinent to me that, there is absolutely no telling who works what shift, and where they live, so the only time that I crank my stereo up to any disrespectable volume is when I am driving through the city. When I drive around on base, I will crank it up, but I use the happy ole' ATT to keep it down when I am driving past dorms or base lodging, and of course the SP shack (base police officers). I don't need a ticket, nor do I want to wake up people in the same boat I am. Sleeping is something that should be cherished because sometimes, it's just damn near impossible to sleep. So I try to be as respectful as possible to those sleeping....... til I am about 1/4 mile from their place, and then it's on! : ) -- - AUSTIN BECKER "Tony F" wrote in message ... Austin, I think you raise a really good point. I know this is true for me.
As people become older they certainly become more respectful of others. In fact, I know guys who have abandoned their MONSTER systems not because they stop loving bass, but because they come to the realization that there is really nowhere they can use it without bothering others. I am fortunate as I live in a rural setting and there are tons of places I can crank it up without bothering others. But I suppose if I lived in the city, I might have a different perspective. Where I'm from we have night clubs all over the place with homes across the
street cranking their PA systems till 2am. The city licenses these bars so that they can. Zoning is really funny too one side of the street can be zoned commercial or lite industrial will across the street 100=150 feet is zones residential. Then you get the morons driving in their imports with those big loud farting mufflers. The summer time is even worse when the strength pipe motorbike hit the road rambling your house windows at all times of the day or night, but the city and the cops around here seem to be okay with it since noting is being done about it. With this said I couldn't care less how loud my system is when I am driving around town. Mind you I don't turn it up load when driving through residential areas. At night I even turn it down when I pull up at a light beside a house on a main street. But I do have an evil hate for people that use cell phones while driving, and if I pull up to a light and see someone on their phone I will crank my system for all that its worth. |
