Default cheapo USB audio playback device for system sounds

Anyone have a recommendation for a super simple USB audio device that
supports both 44k1 and 48k playback?

Something along the lines of
https://www.coolgear.com/usbgear/USBG-SV5.html (which only supports
48k) would be ideal.

Let me elaborate a bit -- no need/desire for any of the following:

inputs (A/D)
24-bit
96k
USB2
ASIO

A really, really basic playback device that (hopefully) works with
standard system drivers.

I saw a little plastic lump at the hamfest last weekent that was a USB
output device. Cost about $20. I'm sure if you knew the right search
terms you could find it on eBay, probably with a starting bid of $2.95
and $18.95 shipping. g

The cheapest "legitimate" one I can think of is the Edirol UA-1, now
the UA-1EX (street price $80) which is fancier than what you want.
Here's a UA-1X with bidding ending soon: http://tinyurl.com/oky7w And
another ending sooner: http://tinyurl.com/qukqe

There seem to be plenty of those

http://www.usbgear.net/productdetails_new.cfm?sku=USBG-SV5&cats=136

Mostly based on the C-Media CM102 chipset.

Looks like the CM-102 Plus supports 44k1 without resampling
http://www.cmedia.com.tw/product/CM102_plus.htm but I'm not having any
luck turning up dongle-format devices using it (yet.)

This might do the trick at US $29.99. Has separate headphone out/volume
control and an optical out for digital monitors:
