8 ohm speak wiring
ok so i got a quick question: so if i wire my rockford fosgate 15" sub 8 ohm impedance down to 4 ohm will the power handling of the sub double or stay at 200 watts? so will i beable to use a 250 watt RMS amp at 4 ohms or will i need a more powerful amp? thanx TWI7CH |

the power handling of the sub doesn't change. You have an 8 ohm DVC? -- KU40 |

The amp will change wattage not the sub. If you have 2 4ohm coils in your sub that handle 200w, so 100w each you could supposedly run a 100Wx2 (rms I assume?) amp on it one channel to each coil (make sure you mono the signal). Or if you have 2 8 ohm coils you could bridge the amp to 200x1W and parallel the two coils for 4 ohms the amp "would see" 200W into both. Most bridgable amps can run 2 ohm unbridged though, so you could take two DVC subs with 2 4ohm coils each and run each coil parallel for 2ohms and hook to each channel; that would make the amp put out more than 100Wx2, maybe 150-200 into each sub at 2 ohms depending. Many say the amp doubles power from 4 to 2 ohms but usually its not double. Lower ohm load lets your amp run hotter and harder. The 250w amp should work fine on 200w sub, but it is somewhat subjective anyway. Powerhandling of a sub depends on size of box and often quality of sub and maybe quality of amp. A larger amp should be cleaner power/better control as long as you don't overload the sub in which case you will blow it sooner or later. Just keep an eye on it, it will only do what it can do. -- s3sqguy |

If an amp has a well-designed, regulated power suppy, a doubling of power can reasonably be expected. You are highly unlikely, however, to get a doubling of power with a "1000W + 1000W EQ/Booster." :-) Lower ohm load lets your amp run hotter and harder. It doesn't "let" is run hotter, it "causes" it results in hotter operation due to the increased current draw from the amp. The amp doesn't "want" to do anything as it is not a sentient being. The 250w amp should work fine on 200w sub, but it is somewhat subjective anyway. Powerhandling of a sub depends on size of box and often quality of sub and maybe quality of amp. This is only partly true. The *mechanical* power handling is greatly affected by the enclosure. *Thermal* power handling is not as variable. -dan |
