My BIC subwoofer stopped working and a audio repair place told
me the amp needed to be replaced. $300 for a new subwoofer
or $150 to replace that amplifier.

I'm not an electronics expert, but I can rewire thigns fairly well.
Is it worth trying to get the amplifier and save some money on the repair?
Or am I kidding myself. How compelx is a subwoofer inside?

Subwoofers aren't that complex inside. Of course, if you haven't already
looked, this raises some questions about how suitable of a project this is
for you.

Basically, a powered subwoofer is a big empty box with a woofer on one side
or bottom and a power amplifier/crossover on another side, usually the back
side.

In your case, its the power amp that appears to be fried. You can find
numerous replacements by searching the web.
