I want to get an XM radio for my truck and I see that all of the
non-specialist stores (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.) are all pushing these
"works with your existing radio" units, which I understand work via FM
modulation. But how exactly does that work?

I used to have an adapter for my Discman years ago where I had to tune the
radio to an unused frequency to listen to it, but it didn't work very well
because no matter what frequency I turned to, I'd get some interference.

Do
these XM systems work the same way? I live in Los Angeles now and I'm not
sure it would be possible to find an FM frequency with nothing on it.
