Default Unusual Case - Connecting pc to stereo help please!

Hello,
Stereo Gurus,

I know there are simple "y" connectors for connectng a pc to a stereo
receiver, but....my stereo is 120' away (and 1 floor above) my pc.

I have tried the wireless transmitters but haven't been too happy with
the quality.

What type of cable/wire/jacks would I need to get the music on pc to
play through my stereo?

I have tried the following with much success: I connected a 1/8"
stereo plug to each end of 120' of speaker wire. Then, I connect that
to my stereo with a standard "y" adapter w/ rca plugs. Right now,
both of my stereo channels (r and l) only play the right channel from
the computer...what happened to my left channel? Do I need different
plugs/cables??

Please help with some advice if you can. (post or email response)

Many Thanks
Cole

Almost sounds like you're just running a single 2-conductor speaker
wire between them so you're just getting one channel, but I'm not sure
because your description isn't entirely clear.

Try this and see if the results are acceptable. PC out to stereo
mini-plug to 2 phono plug stereo adaptor (which it appears you have).
Make 2 extension cables out of 75 ohm cable TV wire with female phono
connectors at one end and male at the other. Plug the adaptor male
phono plugs out to the female ends of the extensions and the male ends
into a line level input on the audio receiver. Parts available at
Radio Shack, for example.

Cetainly sounds 'unusual' .

Stereo is 2 channels, so you need 2 stereo cable. Speaker wire is not
appropriate - you need 'twin screened cable'. However the length is another
problem, noise pickup and signal degradation is likely to be significant
over that length - so you really need a 2 channel balanced line driver and
appropriate converter back to balanced at the other end. All this will cost
money.

But this won't solve the problem of the music being over by the time you
reach the stereo room from the PC room. I'd be inclined to look for a
better setup ...

A Y connection splits one signal into two. You need two separate
signals.

How have you wired the stereo jack at the computer end? There are 3
connections, R, L and ground. You should use twin-core plus screen
cable, leading to two phono (rca) plugs, one R one L with the screen
in common.

It's rather a long cable for an unbalanced line level signal. If
you're happy with the quality, fine. If not, things will have to get
a little more complicated :-)
