Default Alarm System in 99 Grand Cherokee-Advice Needed

Hello to group;
Recently I decided to upgrade the factory alarm system/keyless entry in
my 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I am currently interested either in the
newer AutoPage 850LCD or the Viper 791XV or something along those
lines-2 way pager remote with remote start. I am wondering if I do the
install myself, if a databus module such as the JDL-PK for Jeeps would
simplify things. It appears that module interfaces through the ECM
databus through a single wire-but I'm not sure how the alarm interfaces
to everything else. I assume starter kill still works independently-ie.
through the relay interfaced into the starter wire like most starter
kills. I'm thinking of buying the stuff through ebay rather than a
local installer-150 bucks vs. about 600 bucks is too huge a difference
to go to a 'professional.' I know the systems can be installed with
1N4001 diodes and a resistor or two, but the databus route sounds more
"convenient."
Anyone done such an install in one of the newer Jeeps? The 99-2004
should all be mostly the same, as well as the same model year regular
Cherokees. Any help is appreciated, also if anyone has access to a color
code diagram that would be helpful also (I purchased one through ebay
for $5 but it's kinda rudimentary). TIA,

Marc L

Well I use DEI part # 455J to interface with the door locks and such via the
vehicles data bus, and I tell you, I love it! Basically you don't have to
worry about hooking up door locks, parking lights, or factory alarm
disarm/rearm. It's all trhough that one wire. Most excellent! However, if
your vehicle has an immobilizer system (if the vehicles key is grey) you
will need a byupass module for that, and insert a key inside of it. All in
all, is an easy vehicle to do with the modules, but if you never done it, I
recommend professional install. . .

:-P that bypass module is the dumbest thing ever. I was at my local car shop
the other day and they were putting one in a Caravan. The guy lost 1 key so
now he has to keep a key in the ignition FULL TIME. Which also means
insurance won't cover him if the car is stolen, etc.

IMO: Keeping a key in the car is asking for trouble.

Well I forgot that Chryslers can use the 555c which you basically program
the cars key codes into and it "transmits" them to the cars immobilizer
system. But either one would work. . .just preference I guess.

The key installed into the bypass module doesn't have to be capable of
starting the vehicle. As long as the vehicle recognizes the transponder
code in the key, it will work...the actual key shaft can be cut off to make
the key useless for a thief.

So I'm having this issue with a 2001 grand cherokee.

Does the 455J or anyother module for that matter work with non-de
starters. I have 4500XR Ultrastart remote starter/alarm combo. Is ther
anywhere I can see the manuals for this module? My problem with th
module I have now is that it automatically re-arms (and hence locks th
doors) the factory alarm when the starter shuts down. This is done eve
if the car was not armed before. I'm looking for a module that eithe
behaves more intelligently or does not re-arm the factory alarm a
all.

How did your install end up going on the Grand? Did you run into any o
these issues?

thanks,
nasdaqbull

Me too...like some advice on an install-same vehicle. I plan on buying
a JDL-PK databus interface and a remote start alarm, probably the
AutoPage RS850LCD. Want to know if there are any issues with install,
such as remote start capability, etc? Also, if anyone has a wiring
diagram r other info that would be helpful as well (99 Jeep GC Laredo
with keyless entry and factory alarm system)....

So the JDL-PK is the exact same as the one I currently have. Apparently
except for the DEI one they are all made by the same company labelled
under JDL-PK Jeep2 etc..

They all the DEI one included will exhibit the behaviour I described
above. The only thing I think is left to do is call and ask them if I
always ground the (ground when running) input to the module so it
thinks the remote start is running. Will this have any adverse affects.
Like for example continuously sending the transponder bypass for the
RFID in the key stuff. I'm willing to replace the factory alarm with
the aftermarket but I don't want to loose the key security feature.
The module I have does both the data bus interface stuff as well as the
transponder bypass.
I had mine professionaly installed so I can't help in telling you how
difficult it was.
