Default how to use/modify a guitar stomp box to use line level inputs and outputs ?

greetings,

here's my situation: i'd like to use a guitar distortion stomp box
(i.e. proco ratt or somesuch) as part of an effects loop to process a
line level signal.

i understand that this sort of pedal is meant to be used with
instrument level signals and not line level signals. when inserted in
the loop, the output level of the stomp box is way below line level
(and below the level of the input signal to the box) even with the
gain cranked.

can anyone suggest a way around this problem ? transformers,
attenuators, a direct box, or maybe a modification to the pedal ?

or does anyone make a distortion stomp box that has line level ins and
outs ?

thanks for any advice or pointers to more information !!
