The Blind Dither Shootout
All:
Apologies if this has been posted before. But has anyone taken the blind dither shootout located at the following URL? Very interesting... http://www.24-96.net/dither/ You can compare the output of 21 different dither algorithms online and then view your top pick versus the posted results. Product names are also supplied in the results section. Don't cheat yourself. Take the test before viewing the results. Tim |

Very interesting... http://www.24-96.net/dither/ This test method has the potential to be highly misleading. By boosting the gain 54dB you are effectively testing wordlength reduction to 7-bits - not 16-bits. You can't assume that the best 7-bit reduction is also the best 16-bit reduction. For one thing, noise is a big problem at 7-bits, but not at 16-bits. If you can't tell the difference at 16-bits, why not use "simple" flat dither, which is KNOWN (analytically) to not have any problems. Sam |

Because who wants to hear about flat dither? It has absoultely zero marketing juice. Flat, dreary, boring, old. No way. To be honest, when I first got the AD-124, I played around with all the various dither settings on a live source. And they all sounded a little different, which surprised me. I figure it should only affect the tonality of the noise floor, not the perceived tonality of the music. But it did seem to affect the music tone, so I just left it on gaussian and it hasn't bothered me since. Someday, of course, we'll have an infinite order noise-shaper that will fix the quantization before it even occurs! Just you wait. Can you do something about the noise floor in the hall too? Also, I would like an oboe player who can go through an entire take without changing reeds in the middle. DC Welcome back. Haven't seen you around here in a while and it's good to see you around. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |
